Arbanasi

by ger4444

This little village can be visited in combination with Veliko Tarnovo. Simply take one of the minibuses at the Vasil Levski street and head along (it takes about 30 minutes to get there). This little village offers a pleasant side-kick alternative for the mere mundane city-life in Veliko Tarnovo. The village is inhabited by some of the Rich and Famous of Bulgaria, lets say, it is the Beverely hills of Bulgaria. that is of course a joke when you see the village, the only similarity, is that the houses of these people are covered behind big walls. Everything is typically build in a different style from what you find in the rest of Bulgaria. The village has some intersting churches, monasteries and houses that are protected by government. And again you will find beautiful sceneries provided by the surrounding nature. You can stroll around the village and explore the small streets and tiny...

CULTURAL HERITAGE - Bulgarian Monasteries Map

by desert_princess

While western Europe was busy building castles for their rulers ,Eastern Europe was building monasteries to educate the people ,preserve the nationality and spread the eastern orthodox religion.Monasteries are cradles of the bulgarian culture, that preserved the bulgarian spirit, culture and traditions through the long and dark years of the Ottoman empire. They were refuge for fighters for freedom, that were hiding behind their walls from the Turks The jewel of the crown is Rila Monastery - UNESCO heritage site- See my fabulous page about this enchanting place. Other monasteries I have written about are Bachkovo Monasterysee a great Gallery of bulgarian churches and monasteries by Joro Velichkov

Rodopi and Pirin activities

by DTDR

Rodopi is mostly countryside landscapes and caves to see. Easy walking, very beautiful views, many trails with water spots. Several open for visit caves. Some are very unique. For example , there're cave pearls in Jagodinska Cave. Also fresh homemade cheese, jam, honey.Great place for families. Relaxing and very nice. Pirin is more athletic. Higher Alps-like mountains. Good for multiday treks from hut to hut or in tents. This is a ski resort, so there's more facilities than in Rodopi. Both places are great for vacation. You will not be sorry if you like nature and walking.

Cyrilic Alphabet

by desert_princess

If you plan to come to explore Bulgaria, it will be a great idea to learn at least the Cyrilic Alphabet,so that you don't feel that lost with directions. Do not expect to find signs in Latin ,they are rare. Unless you are a package tourist ,but you wouldn't be reading this probably ,because the travel agency would have taken care of everything. Most of the times you won't be able even to read the menu in the resaurant in non touristic areas. And the chance the waiter / waitress speak english is not big either. On the 24th of may we celebrate the Day of the Slavic Alphabet and its creators - the Brothers Cyril and Methodii. As the newspaper reminded me a few days ago , the Cyrillic alphabet is a fully recognized and integrated as in the EU structures.http://free.hit.bg/injinera/na4alo.htm - cyrilize your PC

Pamporovo

by bijo69

Pamporovo is one of Bulgaria's most popular ski resorts. It's situated at an altitude of 1620m in the Rhodopi mountains. Pamprovo is supposed to be the sunniest of all winter resorts and to have snow from November to April. If you're not into skiing, there are lots of other possibilities to keep you occupied, like skating or hiking. You can also go up to the café on the tv tower on Snezhanka mountain and enjoy the views.Unfortuntely there's a lot of construction going on there and huge concret blocks are spoiling the views (June 07).

Sozopol

by bijo69

Sozopol is a lovely little town with lots of history and also with two decent beaches. The area around Sozopol has seen many different settlers, colonists and invaders over the centuries (Thracians, Greeks, Romans, Slavs, Turks etc...). Traces of these times can be seen all around town and in a few small museums. The town also has a nice collection of traditional houses from the Revival period.
