Varna - our Sea Capital

by desert_princess

Varna is an important administrative, economic and cultural center, the Largest Bulgarian seaport and a well known international resort. It was fonded in c.6 BC as a Greek city-state under the name of Odessos , which means "city by water". It soon became one of the most signigicant ports and trade centers of the Black Sea region. It was annexed to the kingdom of Alexander the Great for several decades and regained its independance after his death. The city was annexed to the Roman Empire in15AD. This was the time of its economic and cultural flourishing. The name "Varna" came into use after the Slav invasions in c.6-7 AD. The city was part of the Bulgarian kingdom by the end of c.8 . Shopping in Sofia - after a ski holiday

by cyprus4holidays

Some tour operators offer you to spend your last day shopping in Sofia rather than waiting around at the hotel for your airport transfer. They take you on a guided tour and then you are left to your own devices for a few hours, which gives you time to grab something to eat and do some shopping.Be aware though, Sofia is still extremely cold during the winter months and it is best to wear your salopettes and ski jacket or at least your thermal underwear beneath your day clothes. The wind seems to go through anything else! Brrrr....

A hiking trip to the Rila Lakes

by desert_princess

The Seven Rila Lakes in National Rila Park, BulgariaThe two days hiking trip through Rila Mountain is a unforgettable experience if you can put some time on the side. Preferably done in summer , as snow lasts long at that altitude. The starting point is the town of Samokov ,where a small bus will take you to Govedartzi - where begins your two days hike. a steep climb trough sky high pine trees and crossing some inhabited or abandonned small chalets, gradually changes to bushes and low pines as you reach higher altitude. than comes alpine meadows covered with smelling aroma herbs and cascading little rivers.Somewhere there ,you have reached the first of totally seven Rila lakes. Glacial by origin ,they are situated in crevasses escalating the mountain and having all different names - the highest one is called "the tear"because of its clear waters that allow visibitity into its depths. By...

Beauty Treatments

by NoFuture

If you're interested in any haircuts, manicures, waxing, massage etc do consider having some done in Bulgaria. The prices are far lower than in the UK and furthermore the quality of service is generally higher. I had a fantastic manicure for less than £6 which included hand painted nail art, the manicurist was very careful and thorough, I would not hesitate to do it again. In addition the massages are excellent as well as cheap. Do not be put off by male masseurs; this is common in Bulgaria and men are generally stronger and thus can give a good massage.

Slanchev Bryag/Sunny Beach

by bijo69

This is another resort to go if you're looking for a typical beach & party holiday. Many new hotels have been built here over the last years and the beautiful wide beach is hardly recognisable under all those chairs & umbrellas. Of course all kinds of watersports are on offer here aswell as hundreds of eateries, shops and pubs.
