Albena

by bijo69

Albena is another resort not far from Varna. It hasn't (yet) undergone the massive make-over you can see at Golden Sands and the hotels which I passed still looked like 18 years ago when I first visited Albena. The beach in Albena is even nicer (wider) than in Golden Sands and suitable for all kinds of water sports.

Golden Sands/Zlatni Pyasatsi

by bijo69

If you're looking for a typical beach holiday, head out to Golden Sands. The resort is located 18km North of Varna and has indeed a kilometers long stretch of fine golden sand. You have got a vast collection of accommodation here from recently built luxurious hotels to the more modest buildings from socialist times. Golden Sands offers all kinds of recreational actvities and is very popular (crowded) in summer.

Burgas

by bijo69

Burgas is the biggest town of the Southern part of the Black Sea coast and getaway for the resorts and other seaside towns in that area.Burgas hasn't much to offer in terms of sights, but it's still a pleasant place to visit. There's the beautiful park close to the shore which is dotted with monuments and children's playgrounds and a busy pedestrian mall. The beach itself isn't great in Burgas, but it's not that far to Sunny Beach.

Varna

by bijo69

Varna is Bulgaria 3rd largest city and the country's main seaport. It's also a major transit point for tourists travelling North to the seaside resorts of Zlatni Pyassaci and Albena. But Varna itself has lots to offer: a big park (Morska Gradina) with an aquarium, a delphinarium, a zoo and a couple of other attractions, lots of museums & churches aswell as the ruins of Roman thermal baths.During summertime, Varna is host to lots of festivals, like ballet competition.

Nesebar

by bijo69

Nesebar's old town is a Unesco World Heritage site and it's not hard to imagine why. The Revival period houses and Byzantine church ruins are build on a small peninsula which is connected to the mainland by a narrow isthmus.Nesebar as Mesembria was founded by Thracians about 3000 BC, later settled by Greeks and Romans. It had its glory days after Byzantium took over the reign and built new walls, towers and churches. During the middle ages Nesebar belonged to the alternating to Byzantium and the 1st Bulgarian Empire. During that time Nesebar had about 80 churches, these days only few remain. During the National Revival Period rich merchants built the beautiful houses which make Nesebar so scenic.

Bulgarian Renaissance interior

by desert_princess

02 july 2006 I visited Jeravna - a beautiful museum town nestled in the eastern Balkans. This is the bedroom of the Filaretov house. The woman in charge of the museum explained everybody was sleeping on the carpets together. The metal object in the center was used to put charcoal bits from the chimney to warm up. As at the time glass was not used for the windows, they had wooden carved bars to protect the inhabitants. An expression of the talent and vision of beauty of the local craftsman ,the interior of the renaissance houses is just as colorful as the facades. Hand carved wooden ceillings ,forming intricate cirlcles or sun, hand weaven colorful carpets , wall frescoes...Room location - Rila Monastery - UNESCO heritage site

Balchik

by zlatiq

Balchik is a cute little town by the seaside. In the summer is a great attraction for tourist especially the ones staying in the nearby resort Albena. But still, it's worth taking a walk on it's cobblestone streets downtown all the way up to it's main church from where a beautiful panoramic view is revealed. Then after all the efforts spend climbing up the hill u can head down towards the beach, walk along the alley south towards the Quenn's Maria Palace (Dvoreca). It was build as a summer residence, so it's more like a villa than a palace. But don't get disapointed because the real gem is the beatiful gardens and waterfalls and ornamental pools. The thing i'm most proud of is the botanical garden at Dvoreca; it belongs to the Biology department, Sofia University! Not only beautiful species, but very valuable (like the living fossil Ginko biloba..see my Balchik page for more). I just...

Cape Kaliakra

by zlatiq

Cape Kaliakra is located in NE Bulgaria, close to the border with Romania. Today one can see the remains of the ancient fortress Trisis, whis was inhabited by Tracians, Romans, Byzantines and Bulgarians. One legend says that the fortress protected a treasure belonging to a successor of Alexander the Great. More known is the legend about the 40 Bulgarian girls who chose to jump from the high cliff into the sea but not to be converted to Islam by the Turks. Least known is that Kaliakra is also a place for watching the rare shag birds and the three blacksea dolphins.Check out my Kaliakra page (akaKavarna page): virtualtourist
