Towns aka "open air museums"

by zlatiq

I love our town-museums. They take you in a diffrent time once you start strolling up and down the streets.Everything is preserved as in the old times. If one wants to build a house the architecture must correspond to the historical time when the town was developed...this is cool, isn't it! I love the beautifully painted houses and their interior...something that we lack back in the region of Dobrudja where i grew up. Pretty much all of the towns are in the mountains, as it seems they had more time to paint and embellish, while in Dobrudja people obviously spent more time out in the fields...and our houses are simply white..heheheAgain i'm only giving you a list and depending on your travel plans you can see any one of them Arbanassi (nearby town of Veliko Tarnovo) Bansko (southern BG) Bojenci (between GAbrovo and Tryavna) Etara (near town of Gabrovo) Koprivstica (central Bulgaria)...

The Panagyurishte golden treasure

by desert_princess

The Panagyurishte golden treasure is one of the most precious found in our lands. As for most of treasures, its discovery happened accidently back in 1949, when 3 brothers were digging the soil to get material for tiles. They thought finding music instruments that they washed in the nearby river. After, the treasure was guarded in the Plovdiv archeological museum as its most precious possession ever. The finely carved objects are from pure gold and weigth alltogether 6,164 kg. It belongs to the Thracian culture - dating from end of IV and beginning of III century.A thracian ruler was decorating his guest table with it."Along with many others treasures from the Thracian period found in our lands, the the panagyurishte treasure is confirming the stories of ancient greek writers and historians saying that Thracians, along with horses and wine, loved the most golden accessories and jewelry....

Nesebar

by ChristinaNest

Nesebar, or, Nessebur, was founded about 4000 years ago and had the name Mesambria. In 6c. BC it became the first Hellenic Greek colony on the coast and was called Mesemvria. During the 3rd century BC it was a flourishing town. The Old Town, situated on a peninsula and surrounded by a partially preserved city wall, is an open-air museum with a lot of ruins from all eras, old churches, and old Bulgarian houses. No wonder a UNESCO heritage site! Once there were about 40 churches on the small peninsula, now there are 14 better preserved. Besides the history of the place, there’s the sea too! In the middle of the narrow road connecting the Old Town with the mainland, new town, and Sunny Beach resort, there’s a windmill.

Dryan Monastery & Bacho Kiro Cave

by ChristinaNest

Dryan Monastery (Dryanovski Manastir) "Sveti Archangel Mikhail" (Archangel Michael) was built in the 12 century to commemorate the victory over Byzantium. It was destroyed twice and rebuilt at its current location in 1845. During the April Uprising against the Turks 200 people, led by priest Hariton and Bacho Kiro were surrounded in the monastery and fought the Turkish army for 9 days. The Turks were more numerous and better armed and when they prevailed, they burnt down the monastery...The Bacho Kiro cave is right next to the monastery, you just have to cross the bridge. It has been inhabited for ages and some tools were found there. The cave has huge beautiful stalactites and stalagmites. The monastery and the cave are near the small town of Drianovo. There are some old Bulgarian Revival houses there.

Pirin Mountain

by ChristinaNest

Pirin boasts Bulgaria’s second highest peak, Vihren, 2914m. The mountain has an Alpine relief. Pirin National Park has an area of 260480 ha . There are many trails and the views are outstanding. They say that climbing mount Vihren is harder than Musala (the highest one) but still you don’t need special equipment. There are also very good skiing resorts there, the most famous and modern being Bansko. Most of the towns in the mountain are charming, with old houses, and excellent taverns with local cuisine and folk music.
