trains are still the cheapest way to travel around Bulgaria and from Bulgaria to neughbouring countries...but some of them are really not comfortable at all..even i find them dirty.

The Bulgarian State Railways are called BDZ.

For some long distances it's better to hop ina overnight rail sleeper (aka sleeping car), as it is safer and comfy. I always use them from Sofia to Dobrich for example. They are not expensive- i think is 20leva on top of the regular ticket itself.

buses are the better and faster option most of the times. here's the website for the central bus station in sofia (it's a new one); most of the info unfortunately is in bulgarian, but the timetables for international and domestic destinations in english.

    It's @ Boulevard "Maria Louisa" #100

    phone numbers:
    (02) 8133 202
    (02) 8133 203
    (02) 8133 232

and this one is for 24/7 info: 0900 21 000

Bulgaria does not have the best roads, esp. between small cities. ..but still having a car is a good thing.

People travel mostly by bus and/or train. Trains are very cheap, but some are crappy and with some it takes forever to travel because they stop at every station. There are EXPRESS trains which are fancier and faster (!?of course).

I think buses are the better option. I prefer the private busses. "Marshrutki: are mini buses that run very often between cities not far away from each other. Their capacity is no more then 10-20 people. These "marshrutki" leave the busstation as soon as there are at least 10 people on board. You pay the driver..no hassle.

I found these two great websites with very good interactive maps (they have english version too).

  • The prices are very cheap, and even if you dont speak the language it is possible to get around without too much trouble, as Bulgarians seem to want to help you even though you cant understand one another. We travelled north and south of Varna on the local buses, travel like a local, its much more adventurous!!

i'm reffering you to the Sofia Airport and Varna Airport websites for links to the Air Companies that fly to/from Sofia / Varna

The ticket Sofia  - Varna - Sofia is 105 & u can purchase it online, but u need to pick it up from the office of Hemus air at the airport

interesting but fact, sometimes it's cheaper to fly to Varna than to Sofia. Especially during the summer season there are lots of flights taking tourists to the seaside as Varna is at the Black Sea coast

A narrow gauge railway links the mountain resort of Bansko to the main Sofia-Plovdiv line at Septemvri. It may be one of the slowest train trips you will ever make, but it will also be one of the most scenic. The train passes through a wonderfully varied landscape of valleys, gorges, mountain ranges, farms, forests, isolated villages, and the highest station in the Balkans. And it's slow enough to stick your head out the window to take photos.

There are only a few trains daily so plan in advance. The journey lasts about 5 hours one way,

Trains are very cheap and comfortable in Bulgaria. Its nicer to travel around by train then by bus because then you can see beautifull landscapes in stead of the concrete of the highways. One of the most spectacular train trips qua views is along the Iskâr Gorge. If you want to plan your trip already at home; and you want to know what the trainconnections and schedules are check: www.bdz.bg. This website has it all. Yet: busses are in general faster. A lot of the railtracks make detours because of the mountains and require changing, which sometimes has durations of 2 to 3 hours! Another thing is that not all places are connected to the railway net. Melnik or Belogradchic for example are not directly connected by railway. There are three kinds of trains : the express (which do long distances: f.e. between Varna and Sofia), fast trains and slow trains. One of the things you really ought to know is that it is, in case of long-distance journeys, a good thing to have a reservation for your seat in the train. When I went from Varna to Sofia I had the night express and I wanted to have the cheapest ticket; that is without a reservation on a seat. So, when the train was leaving, I had to give my seat to a person who had a reservation and I did not find a free seat afterwards. But its also a nice trip to hang all night around in the refreshment room with fellow backpackers in the same situation. For short distances its not necessary to have a reservation. OK; when you arriving at the trainstation there are some Bulgarian words that are vital to know for a succesfull continuation of your journey. Chas / zaminavane: means departure time. Pristigane: means time of arrival. Kategoriya: means type of train (express train is marked by a T; a slow train is marked by a G). Finally; to get an idea of the costs: a ticket second class from Varna to sofia without reservation costs 13 lv 50! That’s cheap!

To get around the resort of Golden Sands there is a little public "train" that runs around the town and along the coast road, I think it costs 1 lev for any journey, you can just flag them down and jump on, great for families with small children who dont want to walk.

There are two airports on the Black Sea Coast, Varna to the the north and Bourgas to the south. Unfortunatley you can only fly direct from England during the summer months, well untill the end of October. After that to get there you must fly to Sofia the capital then either get an internal flight or travel overland, which takes approx 6 hours on the bus, we may give that one a go next year>
