Transportation in Rhodopes mountain

by bgjulieta

Best way to travel is by car because some places are not reachable by bus. You can also cycling but it is dangerous and I do not recommend it. Instead if you like adventure, you can go around by a motorbike. ;-)I'll add more pics which were taken by flooding perid in 2002.On some pics you can see how firemen and other workers are trying to repair it.

Driving routes - Sofia to Sunny Beach

by Whitevanman

Bulgarian autoroutes are few and far between. 'A' roads are busy and pothole ridden with some holes as deep as 10cm this makes for lots of last minute swerving as holes appear in the road surface beneath the vehicle 3 metres in front of you, leave any more room than this and the vehicle behind you will overtake you and fill the space. Driving was especially stressful in heavy rain as some local vehicles may have no lights at all. Also watch out for the horse and carts that trundle along the verge, there are plenty of them about and they don't have mirrors.

Night train - Varna to and from Sofia

by Tom_In_Madison

I took the night train from Varna to Sofia. I got a sleeper. There are 3 bunks per room. It left about 10:30pm and arrived at Sofia about 6am Not a bad way to get there, and you'd save spending money on a hotel. The bus is cheaper and faster though, about 6 hours, but I don't think they do an overnight like this.

Bulgarian Train

by Christel21

To get to Sofia which lies about 600km from Varna, we took the train, the cheapest mode of transport for this route. We also wanted to experience train-travel in Bulgaria. It was not as comfortable as the bus. I would recommend the bus - the price difference is so little and well worth it. Be prepared that toilets at the trainstation and on the train were just a hole in the ground (this was when I was there in Oct 2005, there is a great possibility this has changed now as the country is changing&developing immencely to increase tourism.)

Cheapest flights

by Christel21

We booked our flight from London Luton Airport to Bulgaria Sofia online at Wizzair.com. These were at that time the cheapest flights to our destination. It is an indirect flight via Budapest where we had to wait only one hour for our connecting flight. Have a look at www.wizzair.com. Wizzair only flew into the Capital, Sofia, at that time (Sep/Oct 2005). We then got the bus to Varna. This was not easy to organise. Upon arrival at the airport in Sofia, it was 2am in the morning. With great difficulty we found out that the trains to Varna weren’t running due to flooding. With the help of a young Bulgarian lady who could speak English properly we were able to find out how to best get to Varna. We got a taxi to the busstation and the bus to Varna. The about 7-hour drive to Varna was very comfortable in the luxury coach.

Trains or buses??

by deeper_blue

Travelling around Bulgaria is far more efficient taking the bus, there are many companies that operate national services. The trains are a lot slower and offer a more basic form of transport, they are often pretty slow and the buses are much more modern, cleaner and play movies. However with the exception of travelling to Turkey (on Turkish buses) travelling internationally is better with trains.

Sofia is easily accessible by tram, bus or trolley bus. Get the tickets sold at kiosks, newspaper vendors or in the driver's cabin. You have to punch your ticket inside the vehicle. Ticket cost is 0.90 leva.
