Sofia's new Central Bus Station

he new bus-station is constructed as an entire modern transport complex, considered with the modern requirements of similar public projects construction. The covered area is 7 173m². There are technical equipments, sanitary knots, an automatic telephone exchange in the basement. At the ground floor is situated waiting – room with 1500м² total area. The travelers get current information from the server of the control centre. 47 and 50 buses leave the new bus- station at the same time and go abroad or to different parts of the country. Clients from the whole country have the possibility to receive thoroughly information at 090021000.

Private wheels

I hate to admit it, but in this country it definitely makes your life easier to have your own wheels ...... that is, if you want to visit the off-the-beaten-path type of places like the monasteries, isolated ancient ruins, little villages, and many of the national parks. Public transportation to most such places is either inadequate or totally non-existant. Other than renting a car, you may try hiring a taxi when needed which could turn out fairly cost effective depending on your bargaining skill and the honesty of the particular cab driver.Of course you could always join an organized tour which might help you get to some places ( not my style ).

A great way to see the countryside, bikes bought at Metro Store in Varna for a mere £30.00 GBP Best £30.00 pounds I have spent recently. Warning keep off major roads unless you are a regular bike rider.

Car hire

We hired a car from the guy who looks after the apartments, wrong move, we had a puncture whilst out in the middle of nowhere, the spare tyre was flat!!!!!! Not a good move on our behalf, so a word of warning, hire from a reputable company, it ened up costing us a lot more as we had to replace the tyre.

Buy a bike

We bought bikes from the Metro they cost approx £30.00 pounds each!! Very good value for money. By riding around you certainly can enjoy the beautiful countryside and the wild flowers, that are so often missed whilst travelling in a car.

Transport

Transport is varied you can hire cycles for a few hours or get taxi's buses run to all major towns and ferry boats operate from the sea front.If you do get a taxi agree a price before you get in the vehicle, Most hotels will be able to tell you the correct price for a trip to most locations

Taxi service in Bulgaria is the fastest way to get around town if you are in hurry. They drive fast but safe. They charge moderately by Bulgarian standards. I always recommend that if you don't know well bulgarian, it be best to go with someone who knows the language. Sometimes they say one price and try to change it.

Bulgaria does not have the best roads, esp. between small cities. ..but still having a car is a good thing.People travel mostly by bus and/or train. Trains are very cheap, but some are crappy and with some it takes forever to travel because they stop at every station. There are EXPRESS trains which are fancier and faster (!?of course). I think buses are the better option. I prefer the private busses. "Marshrutki: are mini buses that run very often between cities not far away from each other. Their capacity is no more then 10-20 people. These "marshrutki" leave the busstation as soon as there are at least 10 people on board. You pay the driver..no hassle.I found these two great websites with very good interactive maps (they have english version too).

If u are going on a longer trip i would recommend not to take the bus. It´s very difficult and a lot of waitingtime because there isnt an exact departuretime and the driver can not speak anything but bulgarian and russian.
