Summer flights

by ettenaj

There are two airports on the Black Sea Coast, Varna to the the north and Bourgas to the south. Unfortunatley you can only fly direct from England during the summer months, well untill the end of October. After that to get there you must fly to Sofia the capital then either get an internal flight or travel overland, which takes approx 6 hours on the bus, we may give that one a go next year>

To get around the resort of Golden Sands there is a little public "train" that runs around the town and along the coast road, I think it costs 1 lev for any journey, you can just flag them down and jump on, great for families with small children who dont want to walk.

The wheels on the bus

by ettenaj

The prices are very cheap, and even if you dont speak the language it is possible to get around without too much trouble, as Bulgarians seem to want to help you even though you cant understand one another. We travelled north and south of Varna on the local buses, travel like a local, its much more adventurous!!

Coach Buses

by keeper7

You can basically travel to any town or across the country by coach bus for cheap (by western standards) leaving anywhere in the country. Most of the buses are used and came from Austria. Some are in good shape and some are not. All buses have a sign on the front shield saying where they go and the times they go to these places. All buses go to different places. There is no one bus that travel to all locations. The bus station is located outside in a lot directly in from the Sofia Train Station located in the center of town. Here are some Bus schedules departing from Sofia:Kazanlak: 12pm ,1pm, 2pm, 4pm

RENT A CAR

by jani79

If you decide to travel around the country in a rented car avoid driving by night, sometimes the day-time driving is quite exausting .... the roads are not in good condition and the driving culture is not very high. http://www.virtualtourist.com/m/5fa5c/180/8/The price for fiat punto is around 40 € per day.

The tickets for international trains must be paid in leva. If you are only travelling in Bulgaria, consider that Bulgarian trains are so cheap, that it does not pay back to buy a railpass for Bulgaria. But if you are travelling around in other countries in the Balkan you can also buy a interrail pass. Yet, these are only for Europeans and cannot be bought in Bulgaria. These passes are only to be use in 2 class. You can travel around for one month The interrail pass-system devides Europe (they are only for Europe) in zones. Bulgaria is in one zone together with Romenia and Yugoslavia and Macedonia. You can travel around there by an interrail pass that costs 200 euro. (if you are under 26) This is I think cheaper than the Balkan pass; although this pass gives ? compared to the interrail zone - you extra accession to Turkey and Greece; and you can travel 1 th class; you pay 180 euro for one...

If you want to go to Turkey you have different options. First you have the Bosphor express which leaves from the town of Ruse. Then you have the Balkan express, which departs from Sofia at about 5 pm (I wanted to take this one to Istanbul, but I just arrived 15 minutes too late at the station!!) This train is supposed to arrive in Istanbul at about 8 am the next day. This same train returns from Istanbul to Bulgaria at 11 pm. The Balkan Express is a train that rides between Belgrado and Istanbul, so Bulgaria is only ?a country in between? this means that it can be possible, that while this train is going from Istanbul to Belgrado that there are certain train-compartments that will be uncoupled during the journey. It could be, that f.e. if you want to go to Plovdiv, that you have to sit in another compartment than people who are going to Belgrado. Let?s say that you want to go by...

Going by bus from Bulgaria to other cities in Europe, is very cheap. I paid for a ticket from Sofia to Istanbul only 40 lv. (one-way) In Sofia, I got from a fellow backpacker a list of prices of buscompanies, that depart from one of the two main stations in town and these are some of the prices you have to pay for one-way tickets to other European cities: Amsterdam: 180 lv; Brussels: 170 lv; Munchen: 160 lv; Prague: 100 lv; Bratislava: 90 lv; Budapest: 80 lv; Vienna: 100 lv; Warsaw: 150 lv; Berlin: 170 lv. Less cheap (relatively) are Barcelona: 340 lv; Madrid: 370 lv. O.k: how does it work when you leave the country by bus? I only can speak about going to Turkey. At the border between Bulgaria and Turkey; you will be summoned to get out of the bus and go to the cusumsoffice. You will stand there for about one hour because there are many busses before you with in each bus dozens of...

The cheapest way in Europe to go by bus to Bulgaria, is as far as I know, Eurolines. If you want to go to Sofia, you pay for a return ticket the following prices: Adults: 210 euro, People under 26 or elder than 60: 189 euro; children between 4 and 11: 105 euro. Other directions in Bulgaria are for these categories of travellers respectively 170, 153 and 85 euro. Its good to know that at the moment of writing; Eurolines has cancelled all the other lines that are offered in their Eurolines guide or on the internet. So, the Lines 333, 334, 335 and 336 are not riding anymore! All these prices are the prices you pay for departure from Brussels/Antwerp and Liýge. The departures from Brussels are on sundays (9 pm) and return on thursdays (9 am) The office of Eurolines in Brussels is: Avenue Fonsnylaan 13 (tel: 02-5382049) And in Sofia it is: Boulevard Vitosha 106 (29541143) or at the Central...

Flying (3)

If you don?t want to fly budget, because you may not trust these companies offering low prices or want to fly more comfortable or want a direct flight to Sofia; here are some indications about the prices you pay for these flights (in Europe). British Airways, flying from London to sofia, is 250 pounds for a return-ticket. KLM flies from Amsterdam to Sofia and costs 230 euro for a returnflight. Air France flies from Paris to Sofia and costs 290 euro. The country in Europe, where you can find the most flights (budget and normal prices) is Germany. There are charter flights from several cities that fly in summer on daily base. Check Germanwings for this
