Flying (2)

by ger4444

Some usefull internet pages I found during my search for the ideal ticket. www.flylowcost.com (this is definitely a good page! It contents a searching machine, that combines all the searching machines of the low budget airlines like Ryan air, easyjet, etc.) www.kwikfly.com . The following pages are in Dutch and French (but sometimes they have also an English language option) www.connections.be , www.goedkoopstevliegtickets.nl , www.waarheenwaarvoor.nl www.lowpricetickets.nl www.airstop.com Another page is the website of germanwings. (www.germanwing.com ) Its funny, however that dozens so called ýlow budgetý websites try to fool you. They present their offers as being the lowest prices possible, whereas they are not in fact. According to several sites the flight to Varna (from Brussels or Cologne) was 500 euro!!! Now, donýt be satisfied with the firsts results of your search: go on...

Flying (1)

Flying to Bulgaria can be cheaper if you pay attention to the following ýrules.ý First: nearly all fights to the Black sea coast are cheaper than flying to Sofia. The reason why that is, is that there are more tourists heading for the black sea coast then to Sofia, so these lines are frequenter. So if you are making a trip around the country just start your circle around the country at Varna or Burgas. Or, take the nighttrain from Varna to Sofia, so that you arrive in the morning at Sofia, without having lost a travelday. So, if you really want to go to Sofia in the firstplace, you can safe a lot of money by going to Varna and pick directly the train (13,50 lv) to Sofia. Second: Before you book a flight, check the cheap package tours that are offered on the net or at travelagencies. They often offer very cheap one/two or three weeks at the Black sea resorts. You can then get a very cheap...

Hitch-hiking

by ger4444

Some places are not possible to reach by bus, neither by train. You are dependant on a taxi then. And they know that; so bet they let you pay! A good example is Rila. If you want to go from there to the famous monastery you will have to take a taxi. Of course you can always find other backpackers there, for it’s a quite toursitic, so that you can share a cab; but why not wait and look for a free ride? Many locals go to Rila in the holidays and they will pass the same route as the taxis do. Often they have some space left in the car and they take you to the monastery. Of course its always safer to hitch in pairs. Of course Bulgarians on the other way around think it may not be safe for them to pick up hitch hikers. So don’t expect to bet a ride in a Benz. The Lada is always the thing you get, and with your backpack on the backseat, you and your fellow traveller sitting next to it, it’s a...

Busses (1)

by ger4444

Most of my journey in Bulgaria I used busses. Busses are less comfortable and they don’t have toilets on board. Yet, they link all cities and villages so you can get to any place you want by bus. There are private busses, which are a bit more expensive and there are busses run by the state. The former ones have aircondition which can be very helpful when the temperature is 30 degrees Celsius. The latter ones don’t have it and the windows often cant be opened so you are getting boiled inside. Tickets can not be booked; but that is no problem for the majority of the long distance busses don’t need to be booked in advance. (I only once had a problem; that was to get a bus between Veliko Tarnovo and Varna. Which appeared to be overbooked) Normally, if you arrive at about half an hour before departure you get a bus. There are several ‘systems’ of ticket sales. In Sofia, f.e. you have two...

Trains (1)

by ger4444

Trains are very cheap and comfortable in Bulgaria. Its nicer to travel around by train then by bus because then you can see beautifull landscapes in stead of the concrete of the highways. One of the most spectacular train trips qua views is along the Iskâr Gorge. If you want to plan your trip already at home; and you want to know what the trainconnections and schedules are check: www.bdz.bg. This website has it all. Yet: busses are in general faster. A lot of the railtracks make detours because of the mountains and require changing, which sometimes has durations of 2 to 3 hours! Another thing is that not all places are connected to the railway net. Melnik or Belogradchic for example are not directly connected by railway. There are three kinds of trains : the express (which do long distances: f.e. between Varna and Sofia), fast trains and slow trains. One of the things you really ought to...

Trains in Bulgaria

by lonely_traveller

When boarding on a Bulgarian train, make sure you know what train you are taking. The "P" (written in Cyrillic) means the slow local train. Whereas the "B" (again, written in Cyrillic) means a fast train. The slow train stops in every single village, where as the B are much faster and only stops in major cities. On the other hand, the "M" trains are the International Train, but it doesn't mean that they are fast either. Nevertheless, trains are dirt cheap in Bulgaria.

Train from Bucherest to Varna

by DeirdreM

Be Vary Careful on this train! If your in a group I would not recommened that you all sleep at the same time! As you will notice that people pace the carraiges looking very shifty!!However we arrived in Bulgaria very unprepared with no local currency and no where to stay! at about 11pm on a Sunday! And we would have been rightly stung! However we met a really nice Bulgarian Girl on the Train who brought us to an all night exchange and showed us a Hostel in Varna where we could stay! - Thanks Alana!!!

If you're not on Skis the best transport to get around is the Skidoo. However these do seem expensive by Bulgarian prices - it cost us £15 each for 30 mins.!! It was great fun though zipping around the forest paths on the outskirts of the village.
