How to get there?

by Mandy23

Okay, here in general how to go to Bulgaria:AIR: Bulgaria's national airline is Balkan-Bulgarian Airlines. International airports:Sofia, 10km (6 miles) east of the city (travel time – 20 minutes). Varna is 9km (5.5 miles) from the city. Bourgas is 13km (8 miles) from the city. SEA: The main international ports are Varna and Bourgas. RAIL: There are no direct rail services between Bulgaria and Western Europe although there are frequent services between Sofia and Yugoslavia (Belgrade), Romania (Bucharest), Greece (Thessaloniki) and Turkey (Istanbul). To get around we used the local busses. Tickets are pretty cheap. Probably you'll have to get used to their way of driving, but you'll reach your destination ;-)

While I flew to Sofia via Zurich, I had the chance to ride other transportation while in Bulgaria. To get from Sofia to Varna we took a train overnight for about 8 hours. It wasn't bad really...except that it was rather hot on the train. We could open the windows but when you do that, you will not get any sleep with the loud sound of the train. We took a bus back to Sofia which took about 6 hours. Again, kind of hard to sleep, but quite sufficient, not to mention the price of the trip to Varna was fairly low. While in Sofia, we took a city bus to the airport to pick up a friend. The bus ride was fine. It got crowded towards the end, but nothing out of the ordinary. As for taxis, they seem to be able to accomplish amazing driving feats, as they seem to do everywhere! While the price of taxis is also cheap (by American standards) I noticed that it is still a good idea to talk to the driver...

Sofia has a Major airport for international flights. And there are busses and trains from all over europe ariving in Sofia. The taxis are very cheap, even though they will rip you off, it still is cheap. The busses and trams in Sofia are good too and very cheap, just try to get to know which bus goes where can be fun.And around the country just take a bus or train, again it is cheap.

There are some ways to get there. You can arrive by plane or by train, or by car. But most people go there by plane. There is an airport in Varna, which is called Letishte Varna(bulgarian)or Aerogara. It is small but nice, you can go to Duty Free after arriving. It is situated 10 minutes by car from Varna center. And when the plane is getting down you can see Varna city from the window of the plane. All around you will see mountains with green trees. And also you can go there by trane and arrive at ZHPGara, so called Railway station, it is also situated in the center near the Varna port.If you want to see Bulgaria you need to get an excursion to such historical centers as Nessebar, Veliko Turnovo, Plovdiv. You can go to Bourgas-5s largest city- it also has an airport, rather modern in comparison with Varna. You can take a cruise to Ukraine: Odessa or Yalta. And also to the russian resort...

Balkan Bulgarian Airlines was established on June 29, 1947. It is the national air carrier of the Republic of Bulgaria. Balkan Airlines operates scheduled services to over 40 destinations in Europe, Asia, Africa and North America and scheduled domestic flights on the Sofia-Varna and Sofia-Bourgas routes. Balkan Airlines also performs inland and international charter passenger and cargo operations. Bulgaria’s civil aviation was born on June 29, 1947. The fifty years since that day have seen the conquest of the world’s airspace. The Balkan Airlines’ aircraft are lending over the five continents.

Bulgaria is a wonderful CHEAP place and when you go you have just one way of getting there by PLANE!!!! AHHHH!!! oh you you fly by Balcan Air Very old Russian Tuplof airoplanes that are not alowed to land in 50% of uk airports after 9pm as they are too loud but I will say this I have flown ontheir airline 12 times now and it hasnt crashed yet!!!!I would advise you to not leave your Hotel complex the roads are very dangerous and full of Mafia who think they own the road and I wouldnt argue with them.I hire a car as it only costs £45 a week to hire a Lada but if you do make sure the brakes work as they dont have MOT in Bulgaria.Never take a tour in a local taxi, they sound cheap but when you find out they are not insured you are in trouble,if you are just popping between the beautiful beaches always agree a price with the taxi drivers first.

I believe the best way to get there is by plane. The airport in Sofia is surprisingly modern. Especially compared to all other accomodation in Bulgaria. But make sure you have your international passport with you, since the police at the airport won't let you pass without it. Two of the people of my group didn't bring their passport since they didn't thought it was necessary. They had stay overnight in the arrival-hall at the airport untill a next flight from Belgium brought them a provisional passport. Only then they were allowed to enter the country. Before a few years, it was not necessary to have an international passport, but since Bulgaria wants to become a member of the European Union, they have to respect certain conditions. One of them being closer control of the borders and all incoming and outgoing travellers.Personally, I think they still have to do a lot of work to do, before...

a word about the airline-CRAP!actualy i thought the stewardess would be eastern european shot putter standard but in fact they were quite pretty.I've flown with the national airline 4 times and been shown 'Sleepless in Seattle' 3 times. They had plenty of decadent western luxury items on the duty free trolley like chocolate and jack daniels (both of which we craved after the pickles) but could we buy them? could we hell..we tried credit cards, american dollars, british pounds and thai baht (our destination) lets face it without a gun we weren't getting anything..'whats wrong? arent our Bulgarian pickles good enough for you?' Balkan Air has at least for a moment disappeared (with fleet of planes) after the privatisation. The Sofia airport is getting improvements. If you want to get to the seaside a night train is a good choice. Although Bulgaria had about half dozen airports only Sofia, Varna and Burgas are operational and the internal flights are very limited at the moment.

By plane... and only by plane to Sofia airport.Traveling by train is cheap, but it's slow. For about the same price you can catch a bus. Taxi is cheap if you call a Taxi company (you can find a telephone of such a company, written on taxis)
