by minchanka

Two times I flew to Burgas by plane (from Minsk 1.5 hours approximately) and once we traveled to Bulgaria by car (about 34 hours from the same start point including the time of waiting in queues at Belarus/Ukraine, Ukraine/Romania - the longest, Romania/Bulgaria borders and four hours of rest on the way :)).

One of old traditional kinds of transportation is horse cart. You can hire it for a ride in biggest touristic centers. If you have to cross longer distance, you can use a bus (the most convinient) or to rent a car (if you don't like to tavel in a big company).

By plane ...

By plane The national carrier Balkan Bulgarian Airlines, private Bulgarian airline companies, as well as many foreign airlines link the country to Europe, Africa, the Middle East and North America. By car The country can be entered through any one of the many border checkpoints. Foreign driving licenses are valid on Bulgarian territory. Insurance is compulsory - it can either be taken out beforehand or on the Bulgarian border. The speed limit in the country is as follows: 60 km/h in populated areas, 80 km/h outside populated areas, 120 km/h on motorways. Petrol stations are located at every 30 to 50 km. By train The main European railway routes pass through Bulgaria. International trains link Sofia with many European capital cities and the domestic rail network ensures access to all large settlements.

by Jimmytravel

When in Bulgaria try something dangerous, rent a Lada. An old one. I did,and when it reached 80 km/h the car was shaking like hell. I even got a speeding ticket,100 leva to be payed to the police officer. That's about $1,5... I stopped laughing when he seemed to be grabbing for his gun! Or else take a taxi. Kind of strange when they cut the engine when they're going downhills to save gas.

The best way I found on getting to Bulgaria from North America is British Airways. Excellent service. The only drawback I found was I had to stay in Britain overnight as my flight from Arizona got in too late to make the flight to Sofia. The Hilton is convenient to Gatwick, although a bit expensive. I'd recommend a B&B if you can find one not to far and near a train station or bus route. Taxi's are costly in Britain. The local train and bus system works in Bulgaria. Rental cars are available as well. I did most of my traveling with a friend of a friend in his private car. In towns, we walked.

Many international airlines fly to Sofia. Bulgaria's national airline Balkan Airlines has also connections to smaller Bulgarian cities and often offers very good fares for flights to Sofia and also Varna and Burgas (both via Sofia). The airport in Sofia has a new terminal and it's clean and user-friendly.If you'd like to come by train there are connections with many major European cities (trains from Budapest arrive a few times a day so traveling via Hungary is a good idea).I would not recomend comming by bus but it still is a rather cheap way to get to Bulgaria. There are flights from Sofia to Varna nd Burgas on the Black Sea Coast- the routes are served by Balkan or Hemus Air.Traveling by train is rather comfortable but the station names and most signs are usualy written in cyrilics.Busses connect major cities and also go to smaller towns where ther is no train station. There are...
