    Bavaria - A Friendly Out-of-Season Bar

by johngayton Written Dec 4, 2009

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Whilst much of the resort closes down for the winter there are a couple of places that do stay open, mostly, I assume, to service the maintenance and construction workers. Bar Bavaria is one such.

After our visit to the Aladzha Rock Monastery, on a grey Sunday November afternoon, the town was pretty much deserted, even the construction work had halted for the day. Despite interupting what appeared to be his afternoon in front of the TV the proprietor gave us a warm welcome. He apologised for not having any draft beer but indicated that he had pretty much anything in bottles. Beer and coffee were duly ordered which arrived promptly, accompanied by freebie cheese straws. The latter turned out to be a little bit stale but they were free and were topped up, unasked, by some fresh ones.

This is an attractively decorated bar with nice touches of individuality and despite being the only customers made for a pleasant pit-stop whilst waiting for the next bus. I can't remember off-hand what the bill came to but it must have been quite reasonable (for Golden Sands) otherwise I would have remembered!

    Aladzha Monastery

    by tpk2 Updated Apr 26, 2008

Aladzha rock monastery is carved on limestone and has two floors. It consisted of two churches, a chapel, monks’ cells, dining room and several facility rooms. While it remains unknown when this place was originally founded, researchers have established that the monastery flourished during the 2nd Bulgarian Kingdom in the 13th and 14th centuries.

The original name of the place is unknown. Aladzha is a word of Turkish origins and means "bright-colored". It was given during the Ottoman rule of Bulgaria.

You can take a cab to Balchik or Varna or some other locations on the bulgarian seaside. In Balchik you should go visit the Botanical Garden and Queen Marie's Summer Cottage.
