Golden Sands Things to Do

  • Bavaria - A Friendly Out-of-Season Bar

Whilst much of the resort closes down for the winter there are a couple of places that do stay open, mostly, I assume, to service the maintenance and construction workers. Bar Bavaria is one such. After our visit to the Aladzha Rock Monastery, on a grey Sunday November afternoon, the town was pretty much deserted, even the construction work had...

  • Aladzha Monastery

Aladzha rock monastery is carved on limestone and has two floors. It consisted of two churches, a chapel, monks’ cells, dining room and several facility rooms. While it remains unknown when this place was originally founded, researchers have established that the monastery flourished during the 2nd Bulgarian Kingdom in the 13th and 14th centuries....

Golden Sands Restaurants

  • Spit-roasted Lamb - Delish!!

Normally when I get within a whiff of the sea my brain automatically goes into seafood mode. Here in Golden Sands I instead caught a whiff of the lamb roasting slowly on the spit here at The Old Hause and my gastric juices immediately overwhelmed my normal piscean predisposition. The restaurant itself is a little bit kitschy with its red and white...

  • Expensive is their middle name

I highly recommend you go for the "all inclusive" option when you make a reservation at any hotel. It's less stressfull when it comes to eating, especially because prices are a bit spicy in the local restaurants.

The Hotel International's casino is the most prominent one on the strip. It has the usual gaming tables and loads of slot machines, all designed to part you from your hard-earned cash. However you don't have to play the tables or feed the slots to enjoy a cheap evening out here.During the season the casino offers nightly entertainment in its lounge...

  • Party Golden Sands Bulgaria

There´s a place on Party street called Muppet Bar. It´s a karaoke place with all the newest songs and the best of the older stuff. They have a huge song selection! I recommend this place for people who don´t like to listen to techno the whole trip, you can go there sing along, sing for everybody else, dance, drink and have a great time.

Golden Sands Transportation

  • The Little "Putt-Putt" Train

The main promenade along the beach area here at Golden Sands is about a mile or so long and is emmininetly walkable with various bars along the way if your feet get tired! If you don't feel like walking then you can always jump aboard one of the little land trains which cruise up and down the front. The cost, at the time of writing, is 2 Leva but...

  • Getting To Golden Sands From Varna

Try as I might I just cannot seem to find any contact details for transport around Varna which is a shame as the place does have a very good bus service both within town and out to the outlying areas such as Golden Sands. Golden Sands is, however, very well connected to Varna with buses running about every 20 minutes or so from (I think) the...

Golden Sands Shopping

  • CERAMICS AND LEATHER

I came across several shops that sold unusual ceramic pots and jars (pictured on the right). They take wet leather and stretch it around the ceramic items and then paint them. I was fortunate enough to actually see this done at an outside market stall near the beach. Makes an interesting gift.

  • HONEY

Various shops sell honey. Normally not a big deal, but they are cheap and are in painted terracotta pots. Be careful! If you put them in a suitcase, place them in a bag as one of mine broke open. Yuck! Makes a great cheap gift.

In the Botanical Garden in Balchik you'll find a wine tasting gallery. You can taste and buy what you like for relatively small prices (I bought a very sweet wine for only 12 leva - 6 euros).

Golden Sands Warnings and Dangers

  • DO NOT EXCHANGE MONEY IN SUCH PLACES

Do not exchange money in such offices. They simply con you. They are thiefs, in accordance with police. We were about to be tricked by them. They said the exchange rate is 1.92 leva for an euro, give us a paper to sign, and exchange rate become suddenlly 1.57. We wanted to give up, but imediatelly they become rude. We had a big argument. We ask the...

  • 3 Leva For A Small Beer!!!

I could just about have understood it if I had been drinking an exotic imported beer or if the dancing girls had been performing but just dropping in for a Kamanitza and to put my feet up for half-an-hour!! Ha! 3 Leva for a surly waitress (who admittedly had great legs) when the place was otherwise pretty much empty I reckon was a bit OTT. Needless...

Favorite thing: This could be a little tricky. First of all, pay attention to their exchange rates. In Golden Sands you'll find quite a few offices for exchange, but they rates are lower than average. As an advice, try changing money in a nearby city, not in the resort.
