If you're looking for a typical beach holiday, head out to Golden Sands. The resort is located 18km North of Varna and has indeed a kilometers long stretch of fine golden sand. You have got a vast collection of accommodation here from recently built luxurious hotels to the more modest buildings from socialist times. Golden Sands offers all kinds of recreational actvities and is very popular (crowded) in summer.

Albena is another resort not far from Varna. It hasn't (yet) undergone the massive make-over you can see at Golden Sands and the hotels which I passed still looked like 18 years ago when I first visited Albena.
The beach in Albena is even nicer (wider) than in Golden Sands and suitable for all kinds of water sports.

The Cathedral "Holy Godmother" built in 1886, is THE landmark of the city.
Its architectural design was made in St. Petersburg / Russia. The cathedral is famous for its murals and icons. The sqare in front of the cathedral is used for Navy parades , celebrations and festivities.

As soon as the first hint of a sunny day arrives the cafes and restaurants around the main square (pl Nezavisimost - Independence Square) become the place to be where you can sit with your coffee and watch the world go by - in my case sit watching the pretty women ;-)

One word of advice though is that coffee prices vary enormously between the cafes and that the best value for money is The Happy Bar and Grill.

Where I Found Out What I Had For Lunch Last Week!

At the start of Varna's magnificent Sea Garden is the hidden little gem of The Varna Aquarium. This is more of a local educational facility rather than a tourist attraction and the fish and shellfish exhibits are presented more with a bias towards knowledge rather than gaudy showmanship.

The main room is dedicated to tanks holding examples of Black Sea fish, shellfish and indigenous river species (with a couple of exotics thrown in). The signage is mostly academically worded but there are some interesting facts to be learned by careful reading.

It was here that I discovered what the "Som" fish I had for lunch in Vidin the week before was. I'd assumed it was some sort of river fish, maybe of the Pike or Perch family, but the definitive answer was to be found here. "Som" turns out to be the local name for the "Wels Catfish" (Silurus Glanis) and is indeed a river fish and the bits of one that I ate on the boat restaurant on The Danube probably did come from that river.

    Yep, very educational!

I do believe there is an entry fee of 2 Leva (which might be more for foriegn visitors) but on the day I visited there seemed to be no-one collecting the money and so for me it was free!

    Glacial lakes are most...

  • Glacial lakes are most numerous in Bulgaria. There are about 280 of them,
located in the high mountain zones of the Rila and Pirin Mountains. Most are
situated at altitudes of 2,200-2,400 m, the highest lying lake - Ledenika Lake
in the Rila Mountains - being situated at an altitude of 2,715 m.

The lakes freeze around October and melt in June. The ice cover can be up to
two metres thick. In summer they get their water from the melting snow-drifts
on the mountain screes and peaks. Most of them flow into wild streams from
which the big Bulgarian rivers - Iskur, Maritsa and Mesta - take their course.

Following Bulgaria's National Liberation in 1878 Varna quickly became established as Bulgaria's most important port and the city centre was substantially rebuilt in a variety of asthetically pleasant architectural styles. Despite the post WWII socialist developments and the more modern additions many examples of this turn of the century architecture still remain and are well worth looking out for.

Just north of Varna is the Euxinograd Palace which was built as a royal summer residence in 1882. The palace and its wonderfully kept formal gardens resemble a French chateau. It is set in beautiful wooded parkland which reaches down to the fine sandy beach. On the edge of the estate the famous and delicious Euxinograd wine, cognac and rakiya are bottled.
