    The clock tower

by mirchica Written Jul 20, 2008

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

The idea to build an impressive city clock tower was accomplished in 1888 . The construction site was carefully chosen - the new clock tower in the city park and the Cathedral formed the city centre boundaries of those times.
Firemen used the tower since high buildings were still rare and from top of it they could watch over the entire city untill 1898.Then was bought the clock mechanism from England

Where I Found Out What I Had For Lunch Last Week!

by johngayton Updated Jul 1, 2008

    4 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

At the start of Varna's magnificent Sea Garden is the hidden little gem of The Varna Aquarium. This is more of a local educational facility rather than a tourist attraction and the fish and shellfish exhibits are presented more with a bias towards knowledge rather than gaudy showmanship.

The main room is dedicated to tanks holding examples of Black Sea fish, shellfish and indigenous river species (with a couple of exotics thrown in). The signage is mostly academically worded but there are some interesting facts to be learned by careful reading.

It was here that I discovered what the "Som" fish I had for lunch in Vidin the week before was. I'd assumed it was some sort of river fish, maybe of the Pike or Perch family, but the definitive answer was to be found here. "Som" turns out to be the local name for the "Wels Catfish" (Silurus Glanis) and is indeed a river fish and the bits of one that I ate on the boat restaurant on The Danube probably did come from that river.

    Yep, very educational!

I do believe there is an entry fee of 2 Leva (which might be more for foriegn visitors) but on the day I visited there seemed to be no-one collecting the money and so for me it was free!

    Upright stones(pobiti kamani-Bulgarian)

by mirchica Written Jun 5, 2008

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Pobiti Kamani is a rock phenomenon located near Varna . It consists of several groups of natural rock formations on a total area of 70 km². The formations are mainly stone columns between 5 and 7 metres high and from 0.3 to 3 metres thick. The columns do not have solid foundations, but are instead hollow and filled with sand, and look like they are stuck into the surrounding sands, which gives the phenomenon its name.
In order to be preserved, Pobiti Kamani was designated a natural landmark in 1937.
There are a number of theories regarding the phenomenon's origin, divided roughly into two groups — supporting an organic or a mineral origin. According to the former, the formations are the result of coral activity, while the latter explain the phenomenon with the prismatic weathering of the rocks, the formation of sand and limestone concretions, or lower Eocene bubbling reefs.

    Aladzha monastery and the catacombs

    by tpk2 Updated Apr 26, 2008

Aladzha cave monastery is located around 15km from Varna towards Golden Sands. It name comes from the Turkish word for colorful. The name most probably stems from the colorful wall paintings found in the monastery.

The monastery is located in caves that are dug into a 25m high limestone cliff. Its are not known, but it is believed to date back to early Christianity.

In addition to Aladzha monastery, the area houses a similar monastery, called the Catacombs and a museum.

check out the oldest gold in the world!

by zlatiq Updated Dec 6, 2007

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

The archaeological museum in Varna is a place worth visiting with its 23 halls with expositions from the Old Stone Age and the Middle Stone Age to the Bulgarian Revival.

Here u can see the oldest gold in the world from the Varna Chalcolithic Necropolis, which collection by the way is really beautiful even if u r not into archeology. I also like the medieval treasury, which is the biggest such collection on the Balkans.

The Renaissance building itself is very beautiful and it was designed with the idea to be Girls High School (1892-1898).

Photos are allowed only after additional charge.

Museum is open 10-17 and it is closed Mondays (in the winter season it's closed Sundays as well)

    Albena

    by bijo69 Written Aug 23, 2006

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Albena is another resort not far from Varna. It hasn't (yet) undergone the massive make-over you can see at Golden Sands and the hotels which I passed still looked like 18 years ago when I first visited Albena.
The beach in Albena is even nicer (wider) than in Golden Sands and suitable for all kinds of water sports.

We had a day in Varna so I took mum to see the park. It was very hot so we decided to see the park on board the train that runs from one end to nearly the other. It was really enjoyable even though it was rather hard on the back side!!! The cost for a round trip was 2 leva per person.

Along the Varna bay is the water walk where you can find all the entertainment - Clubs, restaurants with delicious fish specialities and street merchants - you all have it here. Just walk in direction of the beach and choose your place for the evening. Or you can continue your walk until you pass Mr. Baba restaurant, and arrive to the Breakwater and the lighthouse that mark the beginning of the Varna Sea Port.

    Real Estate is booming

    by desert_princess Written May 19, 2006

Plenty of aged brit tourists rush from Real estate agency to agency , to find the best deal . It seems that our coast is offering great and cheap property opportynities and we are soon becoming an alternative to Spain and their resorts.
It seems that the most spread business in our sea capital is to have a Real Estate agency.

    Beach & Sea Park

by ChristinaNest Written May 11, 2006

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

The park is really huge and has a lot to offer: the Maritime Museum in the southern end, I think there's a Military Museum too: in the far northern end, there's the Delphinarium. There are also a lot of monuments, playgrounds, rides, and nice flower lined shady alleys to walk or relax on a bench. The street running along the beach is a non'stop string of clubs, restaurants, and bars. It gets absolutely crowded on summer nights.
The beach is not bad, providd that it's in the city, but definately worse than let's say Burgas' city beach. Varna beach is narrower, kind of steep at places and gets really crowded. Still, if you're in the city and have some free time, yoou could go to the beach.
