Leva instead of Euro,why?

by michidutza

There were two different circumstances when we needed it and didn't have it: first, after we've lost the good way and found out that we were going in the wrong way we've had to buy some gas and the man from gas station didn't wanted to sell it in Euro so we've had to go find another who accepted it but made a double price; second, when we stopped at a restaurant in the middle of the day and the waitress also asked about leva, we had to leave but something is curious- later, when we stopped for the toillette they accepted Euro, same country same people!!Special thank's for the Police officer who explained us we missed the route!!!

Change rates dropping... as the sunset comes!

by johnmi

After 6-7 pm you'll notice that the Lev sell rate will suddenly drop, as the change booths working after 8pm are hard to find.I walk by a booth in Sofia railway station (one of the worst places where to change €, $ and £) that showed 1.87.. and 30 seconds later it was mysteriously 1.80!!

Taxi Drivers "pumping" the meter

by johnmi

The "in"-famous pump to pump up the credit is not only near the pedals...So, beware of taxis that have some adhesive tape around the steering wheel... it's hiding a button on the back. And if you see the credit going up not by the usual 2-4 (slotinki) cents but suddenly by 20c... better change taxi!

Robbers and mobsters

by Crift

I can't see Bulgaria as the safest place to be. I stayed in Sofia for 4-5 days. Twice they tried to pull my wife's handbag, twice I had to pull someone's hand from her handbag's pocket, and most of our souvenirs were stolen from our Bulgarian plates car's trunk in midday next to the Sheraton... that's as central as it gets.Avoid at all costs fights or arguments with people in the bazaars or with taxi drivers. You will get bruised really badly. There are also fake policemen, roadside robbers and LOTS of mobsters. You can tell the latter from their shaved heads. Actually most youngsters shave their head to look like them. The "wiseguys" drive BMW's and Mercedes with dark window panes so you can't see inside. Avoid any trouble with this cars especially if their license plates have more than 2 or 3 "4" on them. This is (according to some Bulgarians) a trademark of wiseguys.Insurance companies...

With car be patience and careful

by elgin99

Streets off the tourist routes are bad. Been partially catastrophic. I do not believe that it has changed a lot. One needs a lot of time and patience. Also the stops are known by policemen which cash up with pleasure. I experienced it at night on the way from the airport Varna to Targoviste. The heavily armed policemen were "stupidly", of course. A tip: speak of ambassador, it helps. Or take the company of a native.

Pick pockets

by lynn6

Please Please watch out for gypsys who live in Varna (Capital) and surrounding areas, as they are very clever pick pockets, you should reconise them as they are always in groups with women and small childrens, never wear a backpack with money in zipper, very easy!!

Money Changers

by onecut

Money should only be changed officially please note that changing money on the street can only lead to being given out of date, foreign or forged notes. Therefor it is advisable to change money at hotels or banks onlyScottish or Irish currency is not accepted as legal tenderAlso, do not rely on credit cards for local purchases

Before you leave

by ettenaj

Make sure you receive a certain piece of paper from the hotel reception along with your passport, I dont know what it is called but if you do not have it you will have trouble at the airport, your tour rep should advise you on this. If you do not have a tour guide do your own research on it before you travel.

Sofia. Avoid Railstation at night.

by Dutch_Knight77

Try and avoid being at the trainstation area at night. This place is very popular for muggers, prostitutes and pimps to hang out. If you arrive by train at night, make sure you reserve a cab and that you donýt have to walk around looking for one. Also the area around the Princess hotel, a very well known prostitute working place could better be avoided when its getting darker. When you are staying in Sofia try to avoid accomodations in the areas around the trainstation and around the Princess hotel. The rooms are often not clean and still warm from the last visitors, which often come and go all through the night which makes sleeping almost impossible.

Health

by ger4444

Is Bulgaria a dangerous country for your health? I asked this question on the VT-forum before I went to Bulgaria and I got answers varying from denial, cynicism and serious warnings. I had heard that it was advised to take vaccinations agains DTP and hepatitis A and B. I didn?t do that however because here in the Netherlands you have to pay ridiculous prices for them. And besides, Bulgaria is Europe, not some exotic country in the jungle! I am still alive and didn?t have problems in Bulgaria. I only once met a traveller in sofia, who had an upset stomach: supposing she had eaten something wrong the day before. Officially the health office says that there are no vaccinations required for Bulgaria; but they recommend you to take a DTP vaccination. Its up to you. There are also tales about food in southern-European countries like spain, italy, and the south-east Balkan countries: never...
