Be aware that there are many poor people who live in Bulgaria the average monthly wage is just 100 USD for a family, do not wave large sums of money about or they will kindly take it off you....Also be aware that there are many Romany Gypsies living in the area they don't know what LAW means and would not hesitate to relieve you of your nice shining ROLEX

When travelling to Bulgaria...

by jasoncornish

When travelling to Bulgaria never take travellers Cheques as they dont know what they are not even the banks what I would advise are brand new english notes as they wont accept old or torn notes.Always exchange money at a bank as there are alot of people on the streets who will offer you very low interest rates and loads of cash for small quantaties of english money but be WARNED the money tends to be OLD bulgarian money that is useless.Never use the busses they are renound as being the worst busses in the world for safety,I went on one last year with 170 people on board it should have had 90 people on and one of the wheels broke off as it set onto a roundabout.Always be on guard MEN never hold your wifes bag or shoes you will be arrested by armed Gun menAnd watch out fot MAFIA it is big out there so be careful....

by ryuguong

You may come accross if you are using taxis that the prices varies even between meters, but they would be still cheaper than in your own country. If you are worried you can ask a price before hand. A five minute journey in Sofia should be about BGN 2.

Some custom officers may cause problems, but it's quite rare. If you rent a car, find one without XX on the number plates otherwise you'll have to pay to every traffic officer you'll meet. Be careful for your baggage wherever you are...

by marko727

NOW, THERE WAS A THIRD OCCURRENCE IN WHICH THOSE LITTLE HAND HELD STOP SIGNS WERE WAVED AT ME. I DON'T HAVE A PICTURE TO SHOW YOU, BECAUSE I DIDN'T STOP! IN FACT, I SPED UP, QUICKLY TOOK THE NEXT EXIT, AND HURRIEDLY DROVE TO AN INCONSPICUOUS SPOT IN AN EFFORT TO EVADE THEIR PURSUIT! BUT THEY DIDN'T PURSUE ME, AND I REGAINED MY JOURNEY TEN MINUTES LATER. STILL, I WAS CONCERNED THAT I WOULD HAVE DIFFICULTY AT THE BORDER, BUT I DIDN'T.

by marko727

THE BULGARIANS ARE VERY STRICT ABOUT THEIR SPEED LIMITS. YOU WILL SEE, EVERY FIVE MILES OR SO, A GROUP OF POLICEMEN ALONG THE SIDE OF THE ROAD, EACH WITH HIS OWN HAND-HELD STOP SIGN, WHICH IS WAVED AT YOU IF YOU ARE EXCEEDING, EVEN SLIGHTLY, THE SPEED LIMIT. THIS PICTURE SHOWS THE FIRST TIME I WAS STOPPED. I WAS GIVEN A WARNING...

Foreign tourists are...

by radzio

Foreign tourists are considered rather welthy- taxi drivers may demand too much, conductors and some policemen may demand a bribe- the best way to eliminate this is to ask for a receipt (smetka)...Also be careful about too friendly locals- some of them are just thieves...Women traveling alone are safe- if there is someone bothering you just say to him Omazena sym-meaning: I'm married...Hitchhiking alone is obviously not recommended!...Traveling on night trains is not recommended but if you have to do it pick a place near a family...

by catdockev

The architecture varies so much as you cross the country. There are old typical Euro things, Bulgarian revival architecture, Turkish influenced things, Roamn and Greecian and Thracian areas, of course the heavy communist ype stuff, and best of all, often all are in one place!
