    INTERNATIONAL LIVE-STOCK & ECONOMY FAIR

by Nykaenen Written Feb 25, 2003

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Bjelovar has over 500 years long history of cattle fairs. In 1993, city and county authorities decided to renew that tradition. The premises in Gudovac were chosen as the Fair ground because of their proximity to the city. The main Fair is held every year at the beginning of September (see www.bj-sajam.hr for specific dates).

In its offspring days, the Fair lacked not only funds, but also innovative ideas. Unless you were in the business of cattle-breeding, there was little of interest to you. But with time things got much better. Considerable funds were invested, the premises were improved and new ideas brought to life. The last time I visited, 2 years ago, there was a lot for general public to see and buy--small animals, plants & seeds, home-improvement tools, household items, etc.

There are also various exibitions on the Fair premises and in the city. The Fair is visited by more than 50.000 people every year.

    International Cartoon Saloon Cvorak

by Nykaenen Written Nov 19, 2002

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

With the support from Ministry of Culture, local authorities and various companies, this small city is host to Croatia's oldest cartoon saloon. The theme of the saloon is always LOVE + sth, that "sth" depending on the company sponsor. Previous themes included "love & cheese", "love & beer" etc. This year the main sponsor was holding Croatian Woods and the theme was of course "LOVE IN THE WOOD". I bring you my favorites among awarded cartoons. This first one is by Branko Medak of Croatia - awarded 3rd best in intl competition and 2nd best among Croatian artistis.

Best Croatian cartoonist in 2002 - Ivan Oslovar. This was not Ivan's first best Croatian cartoonist title - he got one several years ago as well. Just like his older colleague Branko Medak, Ivan Oslovar is a native of Bjelovar, but he does not make living from his skill at all - Ivan is currently employed by an international NGO.

Beside building of "Croatian insurance company", there is another one of most beautiful main square buildings. Honestly, it looks for me like a giant candy (because of colors and shapes on it).
In past there was a famous old town cafe. Unfortunatelly, last few years business wasn't good enough, and owner made decision to rent this place to drogerie markt.

    Boring boring boring...

    by honorary_hrvatica Written Aug 7, 2007

    2 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Unfortunately, after living here and traveling Croatia for a year, I figured out that this may be the most boring city in all of Croatia. If you can avoid spending too much time here, do - there are a million better, gorgeous, more interesting places to go, even close-by, like Varazdin or Zagreb. (By the way, the bus ride to Varazdin is a great experience in itself - last time I did it I rode through idyllic, pastoral countryside and the bus got stopped by a herd of sheep.) However, for a newcomer, it can be at least a little pretty - check out the main park in the center of town with the Pavillion, which is a hit for drunk fifteen-year-olds on Saturday night. The museum had interesting installations and art when I was there, and sometimes there are plays or concerts in the local theater, although they will undoubtedly be in Croatian. For nightlife - go to the bars. If a local bar called Tarkus is still open, go there and enjoy the rock atmosphere and drink a Velebitsko pivo, which is hard to find and delicious. The owners are Robi and Alida, two very nice people, and generally the crowd is full of locals playing foosball or darts. Also, check out Kafic Zagreb, aka Birtija - it's a hole-in-the-wall that I used to haunt, good for enjoying a beer and a good conversation. The clubs are nothing to be impressed by, so you might as well not bother til you get back to the coast or Zagreb. As for the nearby nature, there are some very pretty forests to hike through or unoccupied roads to bike on. Those could be worth looking at if you were interested in the nature near there. Overall it is a reasonably okay town if you're just staying for a night, but don't stay there any longer, since there's really nothing else to do. And believe me, only about one or two other Americans (perhaps even foreigners not from the Balkans) and I can attest to this since we're probably the only ones who've lived there.

Terezijana is a tourist event in the city of Bjelovar, which is held annually the second weekend in June.

It was created to commemorate the Austrian empress Maria Teresa, who founded the Bjelovar in 1756. The first Terezijana was in 1996 and since then has been regularly held every year in the center of Bjelovar - Square Eugen Kvaternik and other city streets. Terezijana starts by coming of a coach of Maria Theresa and with appropriate introductory program.

At the entrance to the Square Eugen Kvaternik near City Hall there is model of čardak (little wooden fortress) that have existed of the time of Bjelovar Military Frontier. Čardak is guarded by historic military unit Hussars on horseback.

Backbone of Terezijana is music program with performances of Croatian and foreign pop stars, folk, jazz, retro musicians, string bands, cultural societies. The town museum at this time exposes occasional exhibitions, often related to the history of Bjelovar or exhibitions of Bjelovar artists like Edo Murtic, Ivo Friscic, Nasta Rojc etc.
