As most of the other Croatian towns, Cakovec had its own stormy history, subjected to frequent change of owners.
The most important period englobes the 16th and 17th centuries during which the Croatian Vice-Roys and warlords of the Zrinskis family had their seat in Cakovec. Several generations of the Zrinskis made the fortified town of Cakovec one of the most luxurious manors in Croatia and Europe at the time.
The tourist office is located on Kralja Tomislava street, but it was closed when I visited. If this happens to you do not despair - just look around, and you will soon see that the most important buildings have plaques with descriptions in Croatian, German and English. (Why do they ignore the fact that Hungarian was spoken here for centuries?)
