leics Says:  Even if the castle itself is closed (and the museum within) you can still wander through its courtyard, and around its walls and grounds.Although the walls mostly date from the 16th-17th century the gateway through which one walks to/from the town square seemed to me to be...

Djeticki Hospicijum, Cakovec

The Main Square(s)

The Main Square(s), Cakovec

diocletianvs Says:  Cakovec is rather small (30,000 inhabitants) so its center is quite compact as well. Next to the park that surrounds the Zrinski's Castle is a system of several pedestrian streets. This is town's living room, full of cafes and street terraces. But, it seems people of Cakovec...

Trgovacki Casino

Trgovacki Casino, Cakovec

diocletianvs Says:  Trgovacki Casino (Merchant's Casino) was built in 1903 in Hungarian Secession style. Although the main function of its main room was card playing, this Casino has nothing to do with gambling. The purpose of this building was primarily social gatherings of Cakovec's upper and...

St. Nicholas Church and Franciscan Monastery

St. Nicholas Church and Franciscan Monastery, Cakovec

diocletianvs Says:  The Franciscan Monastery was built in the beginning of the 18th century at the place of the older wooden building that was demolished in fire. The new Baroque church was built in 1728 and surprisingly does not have the name of St. Francis. (I wonder if the fact that Nikola...

Perivoj Zrinskih, Cakovec

Restaurants

Rustica: Good pizzas

Nice rustic ambience, usually with non too inspiring latino type music in the background. Pizzas are usually quite large so try to refrain from starters like garlic bread (incidentally like the pizzas also very good). Pizzas apart, the restaurant offers a selection of pasta, meat, poultry and fish dishes washed down with a decent house wine though the cellar is reasonably stocked with others. NB Croatian in my experience tend to serve red wine 'chilled' rather than at more civilised room temperatue! For desert they have a good selection of ice creams though my favourite is their Tiramisu.
Not all the waiters speak English (German is usually the second language in Cakovec) but you will get by.

Favorite Dish: They are all pretty good, but if you are really hungry, start with garlic pizza type bread, followed by a pizza (my favourite is Hawaiian pizza) and finish with tiramisu and coffee

To Cakovec with Lars Gabriel Svensson, Cakovec

diocletianvs Says:  Cakovec is only 100 km away from Zagreb, on the major route that leads to Balaton and Budapest. We went there by Lars Gabriel Svensson (that's my car, in case you didn't know) by taking the A4 motorway (Zagreb - Gorican). Lars loves to drive on empty motorways so we were in...

Medjimurje Region

Medjimurje Region, Cakovec

diocletianvs Says:  Cakovec is very close to Varazdin, but as soon as you cross Drava river that divides them you do not want to be heard talking about Zagorje region or Varazdin region. Medjimurje is northernmost county of Croatia, situated in a triangle where Croatia, Hungary and Slovenia...
