Sisak Local Customs

When the storks come back from Africa, it is the clear sign for the locals that winter is finaly over. The storks always come back to the same place and the same nest, no metter how far it is from their winter residance.

This is the traditional folk dress, both men and female, from the area around the village of Sela nearby Sisak. The female dress is in particularly attrractive. It is hand-made by natural fabrics, wool and cotton, and decorated by embroidery.

Just a few kilometres before the town of Sisak there is a small village called Sela (sela is plural for villages in croatian language). Here you can see one of the most beautiful churches in the central part of Croatia.
The parish church of St. Mary Magdalena is a large one-nave building, built between 1759 and 1765. It is of particular interest because of double bell-tower built in the front facade and the third, small one, located on the rooftop of the church.

Whole this area of Posavina is rich of different bird species, especially in the spring and summer season. The left bank of the river of Sava, with lots of swamps and dead chanels, is the natural reservoir for the bird species. Since there is no bridge around here, the birdwatchers have to take this local ferry in order to reach that resort.

Stjepan Radic was the most important and leading Croatian politiscian in the beginning of the 20th century. In 1928 he was killed by Serbian nacionalist during the session of the parliament in Belgrade. This tragic event, intentionally provoked, caused the dictatorship of King Karadjordjevic in order to established the dominations of the Serbs over the other nations of the first Yugoslavia.

This is the picture of the log chapel which stands at the local cemetery in the village of Brest. There are not much of this kind of chapels left in Croatia. Since it was burned in the fire during the Serbian agression, the locals have rebuilt the same one chapel.
The village of Brest is situated in the close vicinity of the town of Sisak.

The city museum houses an important collection from Roman period of the town. Due to its strategic position, the town of Sisak was big and important military settlement in the Roman times, during the Turkish invasion and in modern times too.
In 1593 there was a decisive battle against the Turks who were defeated and stoped here.
