What to buy: Silk production and embroidering is a very old and THE no 1 artistic tradition in, and a great pride of Konavle. Whereas this tradition has died out in other parts of Europe, it is revived here. The embroideries were traditionally, and still are, used to decorate national costumes of the area. Today you also find them as tablecloths, pillows, runners, bookmarks, pin cushions, ..., ... The technique used is called "thread counting", and patterns are very symmetrical. Traditional colours are red, deep blue, yellow and black, but nowadays you also find them in other colours. The women selling them are the producers, this is a full time occupation, and often their only source of income.
Old pieces of craft are exhibited in the Rector Palace.
What to pay: A breast cloth like the one in the middle of the pictures costs 300 KN, a pin cushion 40 KN, a large table cloth richly decorated KN 750.
