What to buy:
Silk production and embroidering is a very old and THE no 1 artistic tradition in, and a great pride of Konavle. Whereas this tradition has died out in other parts of Europe, it is revived here. The embroideries were traditionally, and still are, used to decorate national costumes of the area. Today you also find them as tablecloths, pillows, runners, bookmarks, pin cushions, ..., ... The technique used is called "thread counting", and patterns are very symmetrical. Traditional colours are red, deep blue, yellow and black, but nowadays you also find them in other colours. The women selling them are the producers, this is a full time occupation, and often their only source of income.
Old pieces of craft are exhibited in the Rector Palace.
What to pay: A breast cloth like the one in the middle of the pictures costs 300 KN, a pin cushion 40 KN, a large table cloth richly decorated KN 750.
Whenever traveling anywhere in the world, the souvenirs seem to repeated themselves … fridge magnets, shirts, hats, shot glasses ….. I tend to stay away from them. I try to buy local crafts or local stuff that I couldn't otherwise find in the US. In Cavtat you will find plenty of those types of stores …. but we walked acrossed this store and we were more than happy to find what this stored offered.
From small pocket size local truffle olive oils, lavender pouches to nice selection of Croatian wines … all local and hand made stuff ….
The girl who was working the day we were there was named Alex and she couldn't have been nicer in explaining all types of stuff we asked about.
The prices were also a lot less than nearby Dubrovnik probably 30% less.
If local is what you want …. this is the place for you !!!!
We ended up buying all our souvenirs here and they we're well worth it …..
The shop is located in the center of the harbor shops with a red sign above it door.
