Walking around the city walls gives a great view on the old town. It's very pricy (50 Kuna ~7 Euro) but worth it. Directions: At your left hand when you enter the old town

We walked down the Stradun ,and went to visit the Old Synagogue and Jewish Museum .(very interesting) .We also visited the Sponza Palace and the church ,which were nice. Then the next day we took a bus (1A outside Pile gate) to Lapad peninsula where most of the tourists stay to check out the beaches there. Since we had been to Lopud the day before we were not so impressed with the beaches over at Lapad which are mostly just slabs of concrete outside each of the hotels. Anyway the view over the sea and of the city was stunning as usual. Finally we walked around the port area of Gruz a bit and had a brilliant fish meal there. Leave a Comment

While staying in Dubrovnik we took at Island Cruise that left from Zaton Bay. The cruise consisted of about nine others, the captain (who wore cut off shorts) and his shipmates. We traveled to three small islands which were Lopud, Kolocep, and Šipan . We were served refreshments which included juice, water, pop and homemade brandy. The brandy was very potent in my opinion, but loved by many including the shipmates/captain through the afternoon. Lunch of fresh fish, vegetables, cheese and wine was served on the ship. The lunch was cooked and served from no other than the captain and his shipmates. We purchased the cruise tickets from our host Luko. There are a variety of options for this throughout the city. It seemed like ours was pretty low key and not very official! Leave a Comment

the great thing about Dubrovnik is how small the Old Town is. It's a great place to wander around - it brings back memories, in the small snickleways (a York word there), of when we went to Salzburg, which had tons of small alleys with shops in, which ran parallel to the main shopping streets - it was actually more fun to wander around these, and see where they took you. From Stradun, if you look up the hill, the small streets run right up there - and look ridiculously steep. You get an idea of the perspective from the higher parts of the City walls, as you look down onto the city - see photo, for a vague idea. You could easily spend the bulk of a day wandering around there, without getting lost, and end up finding all kinds of neat local stores, rather than the more touristy ones. Leave a Comment

Now there are two Onofrios fountains; the big one pictured here and the smaller one @ Luza just below the Bell Tower. These were public access points for the medieval aqueductal spring derived water system designed to supply water to ancient Dubrovnik. The spring itself is 12km away and via covered aqueducts and water mills the H2O reaches the town. These are reminiscent of the karez water systems I saw in western China devised by the Uighurs to supply water from the mountain-snowmelt to the dry plains below, except here its an underground spring..probably fed by snowmelt from the surrounding Dalmatian ranges Around the fountain is a cosy lively piazza, where ballads, cafes and the imposing Franciscan monastery can be found near the city gate. Here to is a great landmark for the beginning of the Stradun and its delights. Leave a Comment

The Rector's Palace, which was the seat of government and the residence of the rector when Dubrovnik was a republic now contains the Cultural Historical Museum. Leave a Comment
