City walls: Breathtaking views from the city walls
  • Tip Rating:
  • One of the best ways to appreciate Dubrovnik and its integrity is to climb the city walls and go round admiring both what's inside and outside the walls. They are high enough to offer visitors splendid panoramic views of the whole city and the harbour stretching beyond. This idyllic picture is one of my favourites. I took it in the pre-digital age and it has lost a little in quality because of scanning, but still, I think it's not bad.

  • The city walls of the Dubrovnik old town are truly magnificent. These 2 km long ramparts can be entered from several locations inside the old town for a fee of 50 kunas (2007). The walk around the walls, which were built between the 13th and 156h centuries, offers wonderful sights on the old town and its surroundings. Access from land was protected by a moat and two layers of walls. Each corner of the 25 meter high walls has a fortress. The most famous is the Minceta Tower located towards inland from the Pile Gate.

    City walls: Fairy Tale Walls
  • Tip Rating:
  • Walking on the city walls of Dubrovnik is a must. There are not very many structures of this kind that are accessible. Plus, there is the whole city laid out in front of you. In addition to the obvious highlights such as the main street and the major palaces one has the sea of newly repaired red roofs. With no effort whatsoever, the visitor can turn around and face the eternal beauty of the seas with the Adriatic hallmark - the offshore islands.

City walls: View from City Walls
  • Tip Rating:
  • You get a grest view of Dubrovnik Old Town from the City Walls. If you zoom in on this photo you can see the replacement tiles a different colour than the original ones. Many, many buildings were damaged during the siege but th emost important thing is that ALL of these have been repaired, only signs of previous damage are these tiles. From this picture you get a sense of the hills which form a dramatic backdrop all along this part of Dalmatia

City walls: The walls - they are long
  • Tip Rating:
  • Get on the city walls and early morning if you can. They did get crowded in August. The heat became a problem by the time we reached half way.

City walls: Dubrovnik: A View from the Wall

  • I consider this the spot where our walk officially began. You get a neat view of Onofrio's Fountain, the Franciscan Monastery's Tower, and Stradun/Placa.

City walls: Walking On The wall
  • Tip Rating:
  • If you are in Dubrovnik, try to find some time to walk around the wall. More amazing sceneries for sure. It's almost a must. There are a few stops where you can go down if you are too tired to encircle the whole wall from the beginning till the end, in circle of course. I took lots of photos from walking on these walls around Dubrovnik. Will put them all here so sit back with a glass of lemonade or a bowl of soup ! Photo shows a fortress in Dubrovnik. It's called Fort Lovrijenac.
