City walls: It's cheap and wonderful - DO IT!
An absolutely MUST MUST MUST do! The walls were built between the 13th & 15th centuries to protect the city from invasions of all kinds. They are an incredible feat of engineering. I have spoken with people who've visited the city and actually did NOT take the walk along the city walls. What are they, crazy? It's cheap and you get some of the most spectacular views you could ever hope for in your life! Of the pics I took in Dubrovnik, probably 1/3 of them are from on top of the walls. Drop a few kuna and do it! If you do nothing else in the city, walk along the walls. You won't regret it.

City walls: View of Dubrovnik
An amazing coastal road passes towards the Southern areas of Croatia. A few kilometers outside of Dubrovnik a view point allows a spectacular sight of the beautiful city and surrounding region.

City walls: City Walls
Dubrovnik's city walls were built between the 13th and 16th centuries. They are two kilometres long and up to 25m high with two round towers, 14 square towers, two corner fortifications and a fortress. This provides the best and most unique view of Dubrovnik. The traveller can see the beautiful blue Adriatic on one side and the red roofs of the houses on the other. It takes two hours to go all the way around and they close at 7:30pm. However, since it is much more atmospheric going near to sunset, I would suggest sacrificing going the whole way round and just go part of the way and head back. The light is amazing and to me it's much more worth it than going all the way round. Please see the rest of my photos in the travelogue.

  • Directions: The entrance is just inside Pile Gate, to the left.

City walls: impressive Old Town of Ragusa
Dubrovnik, formerly called Ragusa, has impressive thick city walls built in a tetragonal form around the old city. So this part of the town is a town in itself - with the walls on which you can walk and have a view over the roofs, the sea, and Saint John's Fortress; with the oldest European pharmacy close to the big fountain at the entrance; with the Stradun as the main shopping street down to the clock; and don't forget nice stores. I only regret that there are no long nice beaches (only a few, small beautiful bays) in Dubrovnik, that the city is really expensive for Croatian standards, and that the city is bulging with tourists, especially in the Old Town. Still I think Dubrovnik really deserves its reputation as the Pearl of the Adriatic and as Croatia's most beautiful (and expensive, unfortunately!) city.

    City walls: Wall walk
Enjoy the tour of the old town from the top of the wall. The views are some of the best I've seen. The audioguide gives you plenty of interesting facts. Although it's a little expensive it's well worth the money (50kuna)

I think we must have spent hours on the city walls, walking around in the sweltering sun. I couldn't stop admiring the view from up there and there were a million little details to discover: A pomegranate tree with glowing red fruit in a back garden, a black cat on a window sill, people swimming in the glittering blue and turquoise sea, small as ants from our point of view, a clothes line on a balcony... I know, everyone walks the city walls, but not everything that is beautiful has to be a secret tip.

City walls: My favorite thing to do in Dubrovnik!
I walked the walls on my first morning in Dubrovnik. I started around 9:30 am to avoid most of the heat and sun. The views are spectacular! The entire Old Town can be seen (along with the Old Port and a lot of water). I walked clockwise. Cost in June 2006 was 50 kunas.

In the summer time, these walls are thronging with tourists. In the winter time, you have them all to yourself.
