Korcula Off The Beaten Path

This is not really Off The Beaten Path but off the old town, hence off what is usually visited in Korčula.

Borak is the eastern district of Korcula, south to the old town. It is mostly pedestrian only. Photo 1 shows an amazing kind of amphitheater with an entrance framed by two pinnacles. The semi-circular place has a flat, paved area and a stone bench around. It has to be designed for some kind of show.

Photo 2 and 3 show the stone carving standing at each end. It is all in Latin and as my knowledge of Latin is limited, I was last to translate it properly. As far as I have understood it Petro Lowen built it in 1815 for use and pleasure of the citizens of Curzola (Korčula in Venetian and Italian). Korčula was under the rule of the British Navy from 1813 to 1815. From 1815 to 1818, it was part of the kingdom of Dalmatia that was attributed to the Austrian crown.

Photo 4 is a glimpse into the yard of a private yard of a house in Borak. What a nice place!

The place called Brna is located on the southern side of the island of Korcula, in a magnificent bay full of green vegetation and wrapped in the Mediterranean sun. Around Brna there are beautiful bays - on the west thre is the Istruga bay, and on the east there is Zavalatica bay, with lovely pebble beaches and clean and clear sea that attracts numerous swimmers.
The vicinity of the Smokvica settlement , which is known for its top quality wines, hase very much determined the development of Brna, that soon became main port for exporting grapes and wines from Smokvica. As regards accomodation - Brna has several hundreds of beds in private accomodation - in apartments and beautiful villas, but also in the hotel "Feral". In the neighbouring bay Istruga there is a sports and recreational center at your disposal with two tennis courts, bowling court, table tennis and volleyball on the sand, while in the very middle of the center there is a restaurant with a dancing terrace and rich offer of local dishes. The Istruga Bay is rich in therapeutic mud of high hygienic standard and a very good quality , which is additional reason to come to this place and its bay.

Due south of the village of Cara is the seaside village of Zavalatica. With map in hand drive to the east of town to the end of the road above the small cove named U. Zitna. Park and walk down to this little sandy beach.

92 meters above Korcula is a stone fortress tower that is now taken over with telecommunications equipment. When we visited the door was wide open and we climbed past the locked equipment to the top of the tower for a stunning view of Orebic.

Badija Island can be reached by taxi boat where you will find a small cafe and rocky (!) beaches that wrap two sides of this small island. After landing walk to the right to the cafe. The most comfortable beaches with the smallest rocks are found on the far side of the island.
