HOW TO GET TO THE ISLAND OF KORCULA
Driving on your own By CAR, MOTORBIKE or BICYCLE

When arriving in Croatia by car it is requested that you carry a valid driver's license, car registration card and your Green Card (proof of car insurance)
- Speed and alcohol limits
Speed limit in settlements is 50 km/h and 80 km/h in out of settlements (unless stated differently). On highways a speed limit is 130 km/h.
The maximum permitted level of alcohol in the blood is 0‰.
Update 2008 Now the legal blood alcohol limit is 50 mg.
- Road tolls
You have to pay a road tolls on these highways: Zagreb-Karlovac, Zapresic-Krapina, Zagreb-Velika Kopanica, St Helena-Komin and Varazdin-Gorican.
- Bridge and tunnel tolls
You have to pay tolls also on these roads: Ostrovica-Kupjak, Ucka Tunnel and Krk Bridge.
- Petrol stations
Petrol stations are open from 7 am to 7 pm or 8 pm every day and during the summer until 10 pm, there are also petrol stations that are opened round the clock in the larger towns and on main international routes, all petrol stations sell: Eurosuper 95, Super 98, Normal and Euro Diesel

You can get there only by ferry. Apart from the national carrier Jadrolinija (jadrolinija.hr) there is also a private company "Mediteranska Plovidba" which serves 3 times a day a line from Drvenik (mainland) to Domince (near Korcula city) and this route is the cheapest and short. There are also long-distance Jadrolinija ships stopping in Korcula centre.

I flew to Dubrovnik and decided to check out Korcula. To do this, simply take a Dubrovnik city bus to the main bus terminal which is well away from the old city.

When you get there, it is a giant building almost like an airport. Go to the window, pay something like $20 for a ticket. It is important to either find a bus schedule or show up early (say around 0700). I just showed up at noon and had to wait for the 1500 bus.

The trip north to Korcula takes about 2.5 hours. The bus then gets on a ferry for a quick trip across a 2-mile wide channel to Korcula town on Korcula island. Taking the late bus, I therefore got there in late afternoon.

I heard there was an express ferry from Dubrovnik to Korcula, but missed it. That might be a more scenic trip than the bus, but it is also more expensive. Also, I thought the bus trip was pretty impressive anyway as it wound it's way along the steep valleys and cliffs overlooking the sea.

Korcula is one of the few islands served by busses (which board a ferry to the island). The bus station is at Prat. Bb (Ticket and info window open M ý Sa 6:30 ý 9am, 9:30am ý 4pm and 4:30 to 7pm. Su 2 ý 7pm)

Coming from Dubrovnik, you can take a ferry or bus to Korcula. The bus is the way I went, and it was short and sweet. Oh, just catch the one to Orebic, it'll get you to Korcula. From the north, there are ferries to Korucla. The one from/to Hvar is about 2 hours and it's pretty cheap. When arriving into Korcula, you'll be dropped off right in town.
