Swim, Lastovo

Valadelphia Says:  It's difficult to find a secluded spot if you don't have a boat, but you can find a tiny beach near Zaklopatica (see the "Hike" tip). There is also a cement dock of sorts near Lastovo village called Sv. Mihovil.Swimming looked to be easier around Pasadur. In summer, hire...

hike

hike, Lastovo

Valadelphia Says:  I enjoyed walking from Zaklopatica to Lastovo village; climbing "Hum" (there are two access points to the 2 km trail on the main road); walking aroung Lastovo village; and walking along the coast. Unlike other Croatian islands, it is difficult to find coastal paths. There is...

Zaklopatica Bay, Lastovo

Get a home cooked meal

Get a home cooked meal, Lastovo

Valadelphia Says:  Lastovo is self sufficient. In addition to kitchen gardens, most families have larger plots in the middle of the island (you'll see several below Lastovo village). Ask if your soba host will prepare you a home cooked meal. For less than half of what you'd pay in a restaurant...

Transportation

Good question

Good question, Lastovo

Valadelphia Says:  Once you get to your accomodation, you're going to need to find a way to get around aside from hoofing it. Whatever minivan-bus service is going isn't going to meet your needs.Bicycle rental is a possibility, but there are some huge hills around Lastovo village. Biking...

Ferry, what else?

Ferry, what else?, Lastovo

Valadelphia Says:  Ferries and catamarans to Lastovo depart from Vela Luka, Korcula (an hour bus ride from Korcula town) and arrive at Ubli. Check schedules at www.jadrolinija.hr.Not much to see in Ubli, you'll soon move on to another place. Arrange for your host or hotel to pick you up...

Post office closed

The working time of post office in Lastovo village is very flexible.
That means it can happen that despite opening time the post office is closed. It happened me for two times. Once the lady told me I should wait for 5 minutes that she will be right back again- I think she was making a cofee break and it last 10 minutes.
So take the brake and wait - the post office will be opened soon again.

Struga Lighthouse – HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE!!!

Struga Lighthouse – HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE!!! (Sorry for ALL CAPS – Children involved!)

Imagine – you are on a happy vacation – two grandparents + their two daughters, two sons-in-law and THEIR three small children (aged 7, 5 and 4).

Imagine you go to Struga Lighthouse (partly because it was mentioned in the May/June 2011 issue of NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC TRAVELER in an article called “A Light on the Croatian Coast”) to see the lighthouse and admire the view –

Imagine you are admiring the view…when…

a curly-haired (half-drunk at noon?) brute comes around the corner.

Imagine he starts yelling at you.

Imagine you defend yourselves/give advice – telling the curly-haired brute that maybe there should be a sign saying PRIVATE PROPERTY?

Imagine him shouting “DON’T F*** WITH ME?” at you.

This was what happened to us in July 2011.

How could we know we were trespassing? (IF we were trespassing, that is). Struga Lighhouse is on maps – there are official Croatian road signs and home-made signs pointing the way to it. Yes, there was a gate to the lighthouse – a tiny gate – but it was wide open and welcoming.

For those who may still consider staying there at this PRIVATE bed and breakfast – the view is nice enough – but certainly nothing you cannot see elsewhere all over Lastovo – and wouldn’t you rather stay somewhere where there are nice, kind people? Stay elsewhere. Lastovo (the town), Zaklopatica, Skrivena Luka – anywhere but here. If you really must stay in a lighthouse there are others along the Croatian coast you can stay at.

If you choose to stay there/visit – please realize that the type of people you will deal with are – rude, cowardly (remember the children) and too lazy to put up a sign saying “PRIVATE PROPERTY” (if indeed it is).

Horrid.

Struga Lighthouse – Stay away.

In Zaklopatica Bay there is a small island of Zaklopatica in front of the bay.
During the night the strange voices from island of Zaklopatica can be heared. Like small babies crying and also some other voices of "unknown" animals.
I saw a sailboat crew ancoring near the island was irritated and trying to find out the strange animals with the spotligts One hour long. I tought the were afraid to sleep.
Don't warry this are only the birds.
