    Walking through pathways you can easily reach the old Benedictine monastery preserved and partly restored into the Maximilian of Habsburg palace in 1859.. The cloister is epecially an idyllic place to see - hardly a soul around. It now serves as a restaurant and cafe bar - a pleasant place for a spot of lunch and this area also seems to be home to several peacocks!

    The path is steep, especially towards the top, but takes less than 30 minutes and your reward is the magnificent view of Dubrovnik, Cavtat and the island itself. Even the path on the way down from the fort on the far side of the island from where the boat docks gives wonderful tree-framed vistas of the old town. Do wear suitable shoes as the path is quite stony.

    This pic shows just what I mean about the views - its stuning! At first its just a glimpse but then it gets better and better as you get higher and higher. The views across to the other side of the island are just as lovely two (third pic) and down the coastline towards the resort of Cavtat. (Pic 4)

    Lokrum is a small island just in front of the old town of Dubrovnik. The whole island is now a small nature resort protected by the Croatian Academy of Art and Science and its worth a stroll over here if only for some peace and quiet away from the tourist trappings of the old city for a few hours - half a day is more than enough for this small island. The name Lokrum comes from the Latin, acrumen, meaning sour fruit and it's a name that comes from the tradition of bringing and cultivating exotic plants from all corners of the world on the island, a tradition started in the time of the Bendictines.

    Lokrum was also known as the island of kings, its first written mention was in 1023 when the Benedictine abbey and monastery were founded. According to legend, Richard the Lion-heart was shipwrecked here in 1192 after returning home from the crusades and found himself cast ashore, safe on Lokrum. In return he pledged to build a church on the island indebted for the salvation it gave him but at the plea of Dubrovnik citizens, the church was not built on Lokrum but in The City instead.

    Markers point out walking routes on the island and points of interest and one of the most popular ones is the path up to th old Fort Royal on the highest point of ther island. The fort is built in a 5 pointed star shape by French army in 1806 and can be climbed.

    Another path on the island leads to a natural feature on Otok Lokrum - a small lake linked with the open sea, called Mrtvo more - Dead Sea. An idyllic place in the summer I imagine for a dip - but watch the stones though - best to wear swim shoes.

    The Island has a pretty little lake called "Mrtvo More" or the "Dead Sea. " It is a nice place to go swimming. The water in the lake is warmer than the Adriatic this time of year. There is a hanging rope where you can swing into the water and also a small cave.

    A few steps from the monastery and restaurant complex is a botanical garden. Probably grand in its day with tropical and subtropical plants but seemed somewhat neglected now - or perhaps it was just too late in the season. Mainly trees and cacti on view - these were about the most colourful that we saw.

    Take a hike uphill to the old fort. Although the walk to this fort is really not that far, it takes longer to get there than it may appear to be on the map since it is uphill. It is worth it because of the lovely views of the city of Dubrovnik from this point.
