 | Dalmatia - Dubrovnik Region Things To Do | Tips 1 - 10 of 29 | | Popular Things To Do | Miscellaneous Things To Do Tips | All Tips (29) The Zupa Dubrovacka is the bay wher Cavtat and Mlini can be found. other small resorts in this are are Plat, Kupari, Srebreno, Plat and Soline. All are quiet peaceful places with lovely scenery, iddeal for boat trips and bathing yet just a few kilometeres away from beautiful Dubrovnik. |
CAVTAT is a town and port in the southern part of the Zupa Bay, 20 km southeast of Dubrovnik on the Dalmatian coast of Croatia. Once a Greek colony, the inhabitants of Cavtat (Epidaurus as it was known then) founded Dubrovnik in the 7th Century. Today Cavtat is a popular resort set behind a picturesque bay harbour and the tree-lined promenade with many pavement cafes, restaurants, bars and shops. A mausoleum to a sea captain affords fine views of the coastline here. |
Dubrovnik itself is a stunning little walled mediaval city lovingly restored after earthquakes and wars. It may look small at first but deserves dipping into and out of the place at different times so you can experience the hustle and bustle, the peaceful early hours of the morning before the tour groups arrive and the shimmering lights at night time - one of the most beautiful cities I have seen lit up at night. Spend more than a day here and savour the atmosphere at a cafe after you have walked the walls. Much more on my Dubvovnik page. |
Boat trips can be made from Cavtat to other coves and bays - just 15 mins away by boat across the bay the little resort of Mlini can be reached. A large hotel - the Astarea is here - plus a small pebbly beach. a very quiet laid back resort - a former water mill town long ago - a mill stone can be seen near the centre which is quaint with its little stone bridge over the river running through and into the sea. Its just 6 km south of Dubrovnik and can be reached by boat or loal bus - although be warned a steep road hasd to be climbed to reach the top road where the bus stop is. |
Lokrum is a small island just in front of the old town of Dubrovnik. The whole island is now a small nature resort protected by the Croatian Academy of Art and Science and its worth a stroll over here if only for some peace and quiet away from the tourist trappings of the old city for a few hours - half a day is more than enough for this small island. with its walking trails to its various points of interest such as the fort, botanical gardens and dead sea inlet. Much more on my Lokrum page. |
Šipan is the third island in the Elaphati chain visited on an island cruise and also the largest. Its situated 17 km north-west from Dubrovnik) Sipan got it's name from latin word "gypana" meaning "The island of eagles". It was probably one of my favourites of these islands lying off the Dubrovnik coasline. It was such a charming small place with its delightful harbour and a sprinking of small restaurants. A perfect place for a lunch and a stroll. More info on my Sipan page. |
Lopud is the second largest of the Elaphiti chain at 4.6 km2. It has a mild climate as evidenced by its lush vegetation lining its long promenade. It only has one main settlement, located in a bay, named Lopud on the far side of the island towards Šipan. Lovely unspoilt sandy beach on the other side of the island too a pleasant 30 minute walk away. More pics and info on my Lopud page. |
The coastline of Dubrovnik has many delightful ilslands - these have the sandier beaches than the coastline itself. Smaller rockier islets tend to be used to house lighthouses and navigational aids for the many ships and ferries that ply this beautiful coastline. This lightghouse was just off the Babin Kuk peninsula just near the Dubrovnik President Hotel. |
Kolocep is the smallest of the Elaphati Islands - a laid back place and totally unspoilt by mass tourism plus its car free. Just one main bay and hotel with a few cafe bars along the promenade and a sandy beach. Its really easy to reach - especially on a boat trip incorporating other islands in this chain - and a real pleasure to chill out and relax here. More info on my Kolocep page. |
Just off the Zupa Dubrovacka bay are a group of small islands - these were quarantine islands where in the days of plaque people had to stay until a period of time had passed and they were declared healthy to land on the coast itself. |
