Bol Things to Do

  • Golden Beach (Zlatni Rat)

The beach is beautiful, we were here in late June and it was therefore not high season of tourism. We stayed in Hvar, so we had rented a speed boat with a driver who drove us over, he said that when it was tourist season the beach was packed with people!A nice place to swim and enjoy the sun!It is worth a visit!

  • Dominican monastery

The people of Bol decided together with the Duke of Brac, Zarcharia, on the spot where the Dominicans could build their retreat which had a great influence over centuries on the town. That was in 1475. Today the monastery houses a museum and the church is well worth a look with an altar from the Jacob Tintoretto workshop. There are strange opening...

  • Golden Beach (Zlatni Rat)

This is the most amazing beach in Croatia and maybe in the whole world as it’s actually two beaches in one because it’s like a little peninsula sticking out into the sea. Since we visited it after the peak season it wasn’t busy at all. Because of the wind one side was virtually empty. The tongue of the golden beach is about 0,5 kilometers long. The...

  • Kings stairs and fountain

In the centre of Bol you will find a small staircase which takes you from the Riva up to the place where the fruit market is. These stairs were built in the honour of the visit of Emperor Franz Joseph I. on 23rd April 1875. You may see the stairs on the second photo. In 1885 this fountain was created as it contains one of the two springs of drinking...

  • Sculptures

Bol has some fascinating sculptures to look at and take pictures of. My favourite is without doubt the one of the two men by the harbour. It never gets boring looking at it because of its angle. We saw another sculpture of a mother with child on our walk to the monastery (picture no. 3).In the harbour itself there is another one (picture no. 4).

The church dates back to 1668 and features baroque decorations and has rococo touches. The church was financed by the Vuzic and Andreis families as well as other wealthy inhabitants of Bol. The church was only finished in 1788.

The Barka is one of a couple of places by the harbour where you can sit outside, have a drink and watch the people go by. The tables had sun umbrellas. The bar itself is tiny and there is a toilet. We just had an ice tea each at 12 kuna.

The Pizzeria Topolino belongs to the Hotel Kastil and has a big outdoor sitting area. Unfortunately, when we were there it was very windy and it was quite freezing to sit outside. That was a good reason to order a glass of red wine. The Pizzeria is very popular and located at the Riva aka promenade. Of course, there are not just pizzas but a whole...

Getting directly to Bol from Hvar town was not not so easy, in that we took this quite spontaneously, they were certainly not been at the time some form of public transport. Konzum supermarket is centrally located and the biggest most popular supermarket in Bol. Well, it's actually not that big but it has everything for self-catering. We bought joghurts etc. for our breakfast here and of course chocolates.

  • Eating them alive, instead of cooking.

The sea urchins are considered a great and expensive delicacy on the Adriatic coastline. However they are easy to gather; all you need is a diving mask with a tube. Dive down to the seabed and catch as many as you can.And local feature is eating them straight from getting them from the sea, while they are still alive!! It is so fresh that it moves...

Bol Warnings and Dangers

  • csordila's Profile Photo

Sea Urchins live on the seabed of the Adriatic coastline in great abundance. In many places, especially isolated beaches, you will find them, which is a good reason to have some sort of foot wear. But be glad when you see sea-urchins, it means the water is absolutely clean because they live only in especially clean waters.
Wear old sneakers or plastic swim shoes, when you get there. Maybe it does not look the best, but it will help, to avoid pain if you step on them.

Another danger may be caused by the jellyfish, which may be found on the Dalmatian coasts in big swarms. Once you've been stung, little red welts will arise and they will itch three or four hours later. There are some "jellyfish sting" suntan lotions but bottom line is, they don not work. The best way to treat a jellyfish pinch is to put vinegar on there. If you don't have vinegar, urine will work in a pinch … But I haven't tried it.

The sharks are considered as the highest danger by the bathers, however in the Adriatic the little dog-fish lives mostly, which is max. 70 cm long, one of the world's most abundant species of shark. It lies in the big part of the day on the seabed, takes little cancers and fish. It is sold on the Dalmatian fish-markets, commonly used as the fish in "fish and chips". It is totally unharmful to the people.
Larger sharks very seldom stray into the Adriatic following ships; but they do not like the saltish water of the Adriatic.

....the water is absolutely clean Fish and chips

Bol What to Pack

Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: Even in September it was already coolish and very windy when the sun was shining. So take your sunhat and sunglasses with you and put some sunlotion on.

Toiletries and Medical Supplies: There is a pharmacy in town.

Photo Equipment: We saw a couple of internet cafés and used one. I mention this in case you need to download something.

Miscellaneous: Make sure you visit the tourist office. There is one right by the harbour where you arrive by catamaran. This one doubles as library. Then there is another one by the bus station along the Riva and here we got some information brochures. There is a special map if you plan to ride a bicycle around the island.

  • Roman cistern

In the trees by the Golden Beach you will find remains of the Roman cistern. The cistern belonged to a complex of farm buildings and was vaulted in barrel shape standing on two arches. Unfortunately, the place looks a bit worn as no doubt every summer thousands of tourists are walking to and fro right beside it.

The history of the Bol tournament is long and exciting. It was in late April of 1991 that the tournament was held for the first time. There were many questions and many sceptics about organising a tennis tournament of such importance in a small isolated town like Bol. How will the tennis world react to Bol? Will Bol be able to organise (and finance) such a tennis event? Time will show the best that there was no reason to worry. Everything functioned perfectly and the crowd was not lacking. The tournament was given excellent grades by the supervisor and earned the affection of the players. WTA tournament Croatian Bol Ladies Open brings to Bol the women tennis elite every year.

Equipment: Anna Kournikova arrived to hotel Elaphusa in Bol, three days before the beginning of the Croatian Bol Ladies Open 2002. Anna, accompanied by her mother Ala, was welcomed by the tournament director Mr Antun Plenkovic.

  • Bol street

Bol is famous for its beautiful beaches, full of white pebbles, and the beach Zlatni rat is considered the most beautiful beach in the whole of Adriatic. It cuts into the sea towards the south with its half-kilometre long body, and it quivers restlessly with its white tongue, obeying the winds and submitting to the waves that move it to and fro.
