Hvar - Croatia

Having no real beaches (at least at our sight), and with inviting waters, the artificial building of diving spots is the solution.

Hvar seems to have good solutions, inviting lots of swimmers and embellishing the coastline.

When I visited Vrboska, I noticed people walking on another path, not straight to the beach near. So, I followed them to discover a more interesting place to see and swim, for those who don't mind diving off cliffs

Water starts green and then turns in deep blue.

boats with tourists visit other islands play their loud music which echoes to the shore

other sailing boats moor along the coast

the shore is ideal for snorkeling, too bad we forgot our equipment home...!

There are plenty of pine trees for everybody!

It is a very beautiful beach with a wonderful scenery.

I visited Dubovica rather late in the afternoon, after the crowd has gone and only few people were on the beach.
It was cool and calm. Refreshing to swim in crystal green and turquoise water, after walking down from the main street .
At the end of the small bay there is a large house made of stone with its front door to the sea! The view from it must be amazing, extending from the beach, out to the bid blue, probably reaching all the way out to Italy...!

Take a water taxi to a nearby island of Stepanska and hang out the Carpe Diem beach for the day. Rent a lounge chair, relax, catch some rays, and swim in he beautiful adriatic sea.
The music is great and the abiance is that of a club. Great times!

The cool water of the Adriatic
4 more images

The island Hvar surrounded on almost every side by pebbles and boulders. These take the place of the beaches most Europeans are used to, you have to be lying out on the rocks, sunning yourself or swimming in the cool water of the Adriatic Sea.
Croatian Adriatic is perfect for swimming, snorkeling, boating, etc. but wear old sneakers when you get there. Maybe it does not look the best, but it will help you moving around the rocky and pebbly beaches either getting in or out of the water.
In many places, especially isolated beaches, you will find sea-urchins, which is another good reason to have some sort of a foot wear. But be glad when you see sea-urchins, it means the water is absolutely clean because they live only in especially clean waters.
There are no strong currents on the Adriatic, tides are low, high waves are rare, still you need to be careful. A specific danger presents many speed boats and jet-skiis.

The attitude to topless bathing is typically relaxed, in fact topless is practiced on every beach in Croatia and it is considered normal!!

The beach is an easy walk from the Old Town Center. The beach is almost like a pool from the Roman times. It is surrounded by stonewalls which make a good seat after a dip. The waters are clear clean and warm

Dubovica beach

Dubovica is a really nice beach. No FKK, but a few topless.

Access by road or by bus. You need to walk 5 minutes to get to it. There is a small restaurant on the beach.

If you are driving from Hvar, you have to stop when you notice a long car park, with a bus stop, just before a large bend. Dubovica is marked on the map, available at the tourist office.

Beaches

Take a little boat in the Hvar harbour (120 KN, 30 euros) for the entire day. Go till jerolim Island, and turn right. Little after Palmizana, you will discover beautiful beaches, covered from wind and with no people in.

Dubovica bay

The largest beach in the southern coast of the island is Dubovica!
Maybe it is my favourite one because it's so lovely! This bay has the typical form of half-moon, the beach is made of white pebbles and on the right side there is the smallest village I never saw in my life: just a small church and 4 or 5 stone houses (one is a sort of restaurant, the owners are very strange but very kind, they gave us some figs as gift).
The sea is so clear and blue that you can't stand on the beach without feeling the impulse to dive and have a bath!

Exotic beach

Another beach that you can not miss is the one in Sveti Nedelja. It is also called exotic beach and is the most famous of Hvar Island because it's is very small but with a sort of sand (not really sand but something similar) that it's a rarity in Croatia. Furthermore the seawater is simply wonderful! The only negative thing is that in August is too crowded and you have to stay close like a sardine to other people , but if your neighbour is not a killer there's no problem! No one will protest if you put your feet on his head!
