Makarska Things to Do

  • Beach

In a so long and beautiful coast, beaches are a rarity. However, in Makarska coast we have one of the biggest concentration of them, turning the area in a privileged bathing coast. Sorry, something more important was waiting and we didn't try them.

  • Makarska Port and Esplanade

This is the ideal place to relax , a very long esplanade with shady palms, seats and warm weather, all the ingredients to enjoy a few hours watching the world go by. There is always some activity on the water and when you are ready a cafe is a few steps away. Just enjoy yourself in Makarska.

  • Hiking - Biokovo Mountains

Just above Makarska, there is one of the highest Croatian mountains - Biokovo massive, with the mountain of Sveti Jure (1762) as the highest point. Hiking from Makarska to Sveti Jure can be done in a day. Following the LP advice, we located at the east border of Makarska St. Mark Church, and took the street Put Makra uphill. You cross the Adriatic...

  • St. Mark's Church

Walking through the town with all its cafes etc you will suddenly find yourself in front of this Church, with shops and cafes very close by. There are always tourists taking photos of this beautiful church.

  • Paddle Boating

I actually didn't go surfing but you were able to if you wanted to. The paddle boat holds about 4 people and has a slide. It is pretty cheap to use for an hour. The water is absolutely beautiful and very clear.

  • Take a boat trip in Omis

We took the bus from Makarska down the coast to Omis with the intention of taking a boat ride down the canyon. This was a little misleading however, it was not a trip down a canyon (although I suppose it depends how you interpret 'canyon') but down a river. It was, however, very pleasant and a nice relaxing trip. It turned round at a restaurant at...

..with the cleanest and bluest sea you will ever find! There is a long sand city beach which you can't miss because its all along the city line. But you can also take a cruise ride to visit nearby islands, or to find yourself a private becah away from the crowd..

Makarska Restaurants

  • 'Real' local food

The ambience of the Restaurant is superb. It's decor is original and very attractive. It is run solely by Danni (not sure of spelling) and his chef with some bar help. Unique quality is Danni's music, during and after dinner he would sing and play his accordian, traditional Croatian music. It is the place where many Croatians dine and hold...

To keep it short: Food was ok, but Service was super bad. We had Riblji File (Fish Filet, 90 Kuna) and Kobasice Domace (Sausages, 60 Kuna).

  • Excellent service and good food

Located near the Dalmacija Hotel. The staff go out of their way to provide first class service. Our waiter was very knowledgeable about the different fish. he would inform the customers about various ways of cooking, serving etc. Quite an upmarket looking restaurant but not upmarket prices. Great food.

  • Varied menu

At first look Adriatik doesn't look like a rgeat place in comparison to the others surrounding the harbour in Makarska. However, once you've taken a seat and looked through the menu you'll find it to have one of the more varied menus around. We were getting a bit tired of the same menus in every restaurant so it was nice to have some extra choice...

  • Makarskas Best

Jez's is right outside the Hotel Dalmacija which made it ideal for us. A more upmarket looking establishment than the rest of Makarska, but without the up market prices you may expect. Great food, good service and very attractive surroundings make Jezs most peoples 'last night' restaurant choice. Filet Mignon very good!

Makarska Nightlife

  • Hot & Sweaty

This is a HOT (literally) outdoor club in a cave on the water. This place gets packed, so dress very lightly. You will truly be covered in sweat, I recommend you have at least a buzz so you don't notice too much :) Music is pumping, great beats, but it will be a bit difficult to dance since it will be so crowded. Hands down it's the place to be,...

  • Rent a car

The best way to go around Makarska Riviera is to use Rent a car service. It is not too expensive, but not cheap also. When you decide to visit nearbye Brela or other small places along adriatic coast that is the best way. Even if you decide to go swimming out of Makarska, to some not so crowded beach that is again the best thing to do. The price...

Makarska Warnings and Dangers

  • Parking

Be considerate and careful where you park your car. The shore is accessible to everyone but keep in mind that that access has been created by a homeowner, possibly the homeowner who also wheelbarrowed tons of rocks and dirt to make some parking spaces in front of his house. You don't want to be taking up that space; you may return to your car and...

  • Beware of sharp rocks!

Croatia is knows for it's rocky beaches and this may pose a problem as some of them are very sharp and can hurt you...I myself have been cut multiple times and recommend wearing sandals while entering the water.

Makarska Tourist Traps

    Makarska with Brac in background

by Luskovite Updated Dec 21, 2006

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

It can be quiet expensive to hire out sun loungers and umbrella's every day if you are staying here for more than a few days.
One time we couldn't find the dude to pay so we took one anyway hoping he would come over but someone who had already booked that one came over and went mad.
Another time a guy came up ranting that we had sent him off the previous day to get an umbrella and then disappeared and we hadn't even gone to the beach that day.
So basically hiring is a hassle.

Unique Suggestions: I'd recommend buying a fold up matress, they are cheap and fold up quite small and are handy for carrying wet towels etc back to hotel. At least then you only need to worry about shade

Fun Alternatives: Better than getting an umbrella is getting some of the natural shade under the overhanging trees. If you aren't on the beach early enough then walking west leads you to a wooded area which is right on the beach and has lots of shade and spaces

Makarska Off The Beaten Path

  • Trip into the Biokovo mountains.

We do not normally go on organised excursions but we desperately need to be up in the mountains and since we had no car and were not fully fledged climbers we decided on a trip in a mini bus. This turned out to be a good choice. The road was of course very narrow (mostly single track with passing places), twisty and twindy. Typical hair raising...

  • Where Makarska meets Biokovo

You already know the place Makarska. Biokovo is this huge mountain behind. If you are a passionate hiker, you can climb up but please, make sure you know HOW to do that and that you know your way! The best way would be to go with some local guide or with someone really familiar with the route.
