Getting to and from the Split airport is not that problematic as it might seem at the first sight. There are Croatia Airlines buses that wait for you on arrivals of all Croatia Airlines flights and depart from the Obala Lazareta (in front od the Diocletian’s palace in Split) 1,5 hours before departures of their flights. The ticket costs 30 kunas.

OK, but what about other flights? Well, then you’re in trouble unless you know where to wait for the local bus since there’s no information about this at the airport. You may, of course, take a taxi that will cost you around 200 kunas to the center of Split.

Or you may use local Promet bus #37, that operates on Split – Trogir route and passes in front of the airport. Buses pass every 20 minutes (30 mins on Sundays and holidays) – to catch them just walk across the parking lot and through a small olive-grove. There you’ll see two (rather ugly looking) yellow bus shelters – and voila: wait at the side of the Airport if you intend to go to Trogir, or across the road if your destination is Split. For Trogir you’ll need 1-fare zone ticket (8 kunas one way), for Solin 2-zone ticket (10 kunas) and for Split 3-zone ticket (14 kunas) - tickets can be bought in the bus.

In Split buses arrive and depart from the local bus station situated at Sukoisanska street. If you don’t like walking, you can use the same ticket and catch any of the buses that pass Domovinskog rata street and lead either to Theatre square (HNK station: buses 1, 4 or 16) to Trznica (buses 2, 3, 9 and 10) or to the Ferry port (Trajektna luka: buses 2, 9 and 10).

I flew into Split on the early flight from Zagreb on Croatia Airlines. The flight was short (40 minutes) uneventful (just the way I like it) and arrival in the rather small airport was easy. Inside, you'll find a currency exchange, a cafe and a shop or two, but the airport is fairly small.

Getting into town was easy. The airport is about 25km northwest of Split (in Kastela), so I hopped on the Croatia Airlines bus and for 30kn (as of Feb. 2004) it took me to the waterfront, Riva of Split right in front of the Diocletian's Palace.

I also noticed that when I took the #37 bus from Trogir back to Split, the public bus stops in front of the airport. You'll have to walk through the parking lot in front of the airport out to the street, but that will save you a few bucks.

Split Airport (code SPU) is situated in Kastela, about 25km north-west from Split.
The main airline flying from Split is Croatia Airlines, offering 4-5 daily flights to Zagreb (35 minutes), as well as direct flights to Rome, Dusseldorf, Frankfurt and Prague. Via Zagreb you can catch connections to other European destinations.

Other airlines that fly from Split are Adria Airways (to Ljubljana), Czech Airlines (Prague), Malev (Budapest), Sky Europe (Bratislava, Budapest), Snowflake (Stockholm, Copenhagen), Air Adriatic (Göteborg, London) and a number of charter airlines.

Airport building is modern and in constant reconstructions in the last 2-3 years. As other airports in Croatia, it is quite small with limited shopping and café/restaurant possibilities but offering all of the usual services you might need (Info-office, Newsstands, Bank & Post office, Currency exchange, ATMs, Car rentals, Tourist information etc.)

We arrived by bus to Split but flew out to Cologne with Germanwings. Split airport is located near the town of Trogir and it's about a 40 minutes busride by airport bus to Split. When we were there the airport was very busy and there was not enough seating in the departure hall, actually it was very full also with people standing.

In the check-in hall there is a kiosk and the best feature was the free internet corner with 2 internet terminals!

In the departure hall there were toilets, a snack bar, duty free and not much more.

Having flown BA in and out of Split on previous visits to Croatia and Bosnia, I was all set to plan this year's visit on the same lines - fly into Split, hire a car at the airport, travel around, return to Split, hand the car back and off into the blue - easy. Logged into their website to check the schedules - uh oh! they're not flying into Split this year (2008)! In fact, the only place they fly to in this year is Dubrovnik - 250km to the south and, lovely as it is, not exactly where I'd though of going.

Not wanting to start a holiday with 6am flight from Gatwick - most inconvenient - led to a lot of juggling around to come up with a plan that would make the best of the time we have available. We had always intended to include a visit to the Bosnian city of Sarajevo in this year's trip, so we're flying into there first, bussing it down to Split where we'll pick up a car, and flying out of Dubrovnik. It has meant changing dates as well as routes.

So why am I prattling on with this? I guess the moral is that you have two options when it comes to holiday planning - think ahead and/or be flexible. The more flexible you are, the later you can leave it to plan, but if you have something you really want to do and a short window in which to do it, you really have to plan ahead. The other thing - obvious as it may seem - when you begin to make your plans, make sure you're working with up-to-date information. Airlines do change their schedules and, as we found out, their routes.

When in Zagreb, you have the 3 main options on getting to Split (or Dubronvik). When I was there, busses were more viable then trains, because of the recent war. It was the choice of a 11+ hour train/buss ride for about $12 or pay $90 for a 45 minute flight. It was cheaper for my friend who was 26 years (or younger). We opted for the flight. And it did not matter if we bought the ticket the day before our flight!

  • If your time is limited, you might want to consider flying to Split. For non-Europeans, the best place for discount airfares is Europebyair.com. Each flight cost $99, which does not include taxes. There are no penalties for flying one way. There are several nonstop flights between Split and other European cities. You can also change planes in Zagreb, although that will double the price. Easyjet.com is another option as it offers flights between Split and London.

The airport is Split is situated west of the city centre and the terminal building is very fresh and modern, I was very surprised when arriving there!
Croatia Airlines is the main operator at Split airport and they have mostly flights to Zagreb but also some international to e.g. Frankfurt.
Austrian Airlines has also a daily flight to Vienna where one can benefit from many connections to the rest of Europe and the world.
There is an airportbus between Split city centre (close to the tourist office which is close to the port) but the buses only connect to Croatia Airlines departures and arrivals. As I went by Austrian Airlines I had no choice but taking a taxi.
