    Hajduk football stadium

The Hajduk football club was founded in 1911 in a restaurant in Prague. In 2011 it will have it's 100 years jubilee and the club has never changed its name. The club is very successful and has seen countries come and go like the Austrian-Hungarian Empire and Yugoslavia.

The fans of the Hajduk football club are called Torcida. In 1950 some fans decided to support their club like the Brasilians did in Brazil. Torcida became a mass movement and the Yugoslavian regime didn't like it at all and banned it. But Torcida is back strong as ever.

The stadium is called Poljud and fits 34'448 seats.

When we visited the stadium was closed and I saw someone going in, so I thought we just do the same. Well, there is security but we asked politely to have a quick look which was granted after an initial "no".

The passage leading into the stadium brought us along a photogallery of the old days history. Looking up in the hall displayed some trophies and we passed the football shoes library.

Equipment: There is a fan shop at the stadium but it was closed when we were there. Another fan shop is located in the center of Split in a side street of Marmontova. Coming from the harbour up the Marmontova it's in a side street to the right somewhere after the fish market.

The local soccer team has been around since 1911 and is one of the country's most successful clubs. They won Yugoslav championships many times over the years and became Croatian champions in '92, '94 and '95 and '01.

Not bad, eh? But perhaps they are even more famous for their loyal and rowdy fans, the torcida. The name was lifted from the Brazilian fans who the Hajduk supporters saw in film footage of the 1950 World Cup (if you're from Uruguay you know what happend in that one!). They loved the Brazilians' passion and decided to bring that same fervor to Croatia.

Tickets are available at the stadium (Poljud Stadium, north of the Old Town). See the Hajduk website for details.

According to the locals, Poljud is home of the best fotball club in the world, known under the name of "Hajduk". When is Split you should accept it without arguing.
Of course it is not the truth and the local supporters are very well awared of it, in particularly in this days. "Hajduk", however, have a special place in the heart of every citizen from Dalmatia. Supporting "Hajduk" is a way of life!

Hajduk Split - The local pride

Hajduk Split is the the number one team in the town and that's easy to observe. Team's logos are omnipresent on the streets of Split and the spectators are heard singing on the match days.

The name Hajduk originates from bandits that fought the Ottoman Turks. The club was founded in 1911, when Croatia was part of Austro-Hungarian Empire. The team was supported by pro-Croat movement and it's logo still features the Croat coat-of-arms.

Hajduk has a glorious past both in Yugoslavian and Croatian cup and league competitions. It's latest successes are the Croatian Championship of the seasons 2004/05 & 2003/04 and Croatian Supercup in 2005.

The home ground of the team is the 35,000 seat Poljud Stadium, built in 1979.

We got the amazing opportunity to walk all around the stadium one day and we were the only ones in there. it was cool that I actually stepped on the grass and walk through the exact tunnel that the players come through.

Split takes its football very seriously and Hadjuk are one of the best (if not the best) teams in Croatia. They are the country's most successful club and are also current champions. Games take place at the Poljudsko setaliste, the stadium looks like a giant spaceship from the outside. You should be allowed into the ground to take a look around for free, something what never happens in England!!!
