The present church and the monastery of St. Franciscan was built in the beginning of the 20th century, however, the history of the Franciscans goes back to the 13th century. The first church and the monastery was built on the remains of an early christian church, dated from 5 or 6th century and consacrated to St. Felix. Later on, in the 16th century the church was pulled down and its stones were used for the fortifications, built against the invasion of Ottomans.
The new church is very peopular among the locals who usually choosing it for the weddings.

This large square hosts the Split Music Festival in the summer and other events. This square is surrounded by colourful neo-Renaissance buildings known as the Prokurative and along with The City Youth Theatre, shops cafes and restaurants.

Nearby is The Church of St Francis and Riva Promenade where they had a Coca Cola Promotion event when I visited.

At the other end of the promenade from the Palace is the Prokurative, or Republic Square as it used to be called. Its modern name reflects its design pretensions: It borrows heavily from the Procuratie in Venice, the three buildings which surround St. Mark's Square. If you've ever been to Venice you'll recognise the design immediately.

Originally the square was a grassy public park, but now it's a wide tiled expanse which is often the venue for big name music acts, like the Arctic Monkeys who played here in 2009. It still retains its neo-Renaissance charm, and the square opens up onto, and frames wonderfully, Split's calm-watered harbour.

This is the high end look and next to Marmontova Ulica, the main street with upscale shops and a huge square with the most elegant building in a three corner horseshoe shaped site. The name is Prokurative and is really named as Republic Square. The style patterns Venice squares and the first part was completed in 1928. It was a large piece since Napoleon's General Marmont had this area for his garden, and no buildings were on the site. The Hotel Bellevue is occupying one wing and it looks fine outside except the backside needs work.

The so called "Prokurative" are buildings in neo-Renaissance style. They were built in the second half of the 19th century by General Marmont clearly imitating Venetian architecture. This square is most impressive by its size and on the one side adjoining towards the harbour is the infamous Hotel Bellevue whose entrance is on the street behind it.

The largest square of town, and a very beautiful one, surrounded by old venetian style buildings mostly painted in red and with pleasant arcades where you can find cafes, shops and cinemas.
Some stairs lead to the sea level and the lovely Rivas, the sea promenade of Split.

Trg Republike is a beautiful open square surrounded by columned buildings on each side and facing the harbour on the south side. It contains some government offices and a movie theatre. In the picture you can look out and see the sea and the end of Trg Republike, which is another square, Trg Franjo Tudmana.

WT2: Old Town Walking Tour

Official name for this square is Trg Republike (Republic’s Square). Built after the famous model in Venice everyone knows it as Prokurative. This neo-rennaissance complex defined by monumental arcades was built in the second part of the 19th Century at the place of the former garden by Napoleon’s general Marmont. Eastern wing of Prokurative was finished in 1928 and houses some offices while its (older) Western wing is occupied by Hotel Bellevue. As the hotel itself, the Kavana Bellevue is in desparate need of repair but this cult place for having coffee is still worth a short visit.

Large area of Prokurative is most famous as the place where Split festival happens – once it was a rival to similar festival in San Remo but today is only the fade shadow of the past.

View to the south from the horseshoe-shaped square was once closed by monumental fountain that was also marking the end of Riva. Although built in 1880, long before the arrival of fascism, the sign on top of the fountain resembeld the Fascio sign an this was enough reason to remove it just after the WWII. Since then the fountain place stands empty and the fountain is being shortly reconstructed each time there is some film being made that takes place in the past.

This elegant, although somewhat worn square is located on the western end of the Riva at the foot of Marmontova Street. The neo-Renaissance buildings here are called the Prokurative (they are city council buildings). Most of the time that I passed through this square it was fairly empty other than a few kids kicking a soccer ball or the occasional mini-crowd waiting for a movie to begin at the theater at the far end of the square.

Apparently in the summer, it's a much more happening place, with outdoor concerts in the square.

Its just nice to walk around. reminds me of Venice.. This square are just off Riva and very beautiful. This is a place to be during jazz festivals, classical or pop concerts etc. If you want to go to the movies, Theather Marjan is above it. Just near is hotel Bellevue if you want to stick around during Split music festival in July.
