by acemj Okay, it's not really a trap. This is photo of the privately run Turist Biro office located on the waterfront at Riva 12. It's a good place to get local information about what's happening in town, to book a room or to arrange for excursions to some of the nearby islands. You can also go to the tourist office inside the Diocletian's Palace in the square where you'll also find the Cathedral and the Peristyle. Leave a Comment

Arriving in Split you will be confronted by legions of old dears shouting " sleepy" at you ,they can get a bit pushy.
Its one way of getting a private room but you really take your chances with this one.
Travel agencies will sort you out with private rooms that are more geared toward visitors. Leave a Comment

The locals are most unconvential types, some of them will completely ignore you some will be very friendly and most helpful. In case you ask them to help you find an specific sight, you saw in your guide book, there might be problem in understanding answer they give you. If you ask for Narodni trg, it is Pjaca, Ribarnica is Peškarija, Trg Brace Radic is Vocni trg, Stari Varoš is Varoš, etc. Most of their answers you wont understand or find in the guide book. The will insist in calling the spots in different names, not in order to confuse you or for other motiffs, most of them even do not know the official names of the certain spots. Leave a Comment

And... bla, bla, bla, and look at the acoustic quality of this room, and, bla, bla, bla, (the sympathetic guide debited all the prepared speech), and there you have a statue of Diocletian and... oops! Diocletian was facing the wall! The surprised exclamation of the guide was so spontaneous, that no one could stop a long laugh, after what Pepe carefully turned the statue to its proper position. It was fun, but the guy who turned the statue to the wall must be careful, because with old pieces, jokes are not always so innocent. It's a copy, it seems, but the laugh remains. Leave a Comment

by travelmad478 See it. Touch the big toe. You're done. I actually found this statue rather hideous, although its sculptor, Ivan Mestrovic, is considered one of Croatia's best. Leave a Comment

narrow street in old core of the town by croisbeauty, 3 more photos Watch out, this narrow streets of the old core of the town looks just like a labyrint, you almost need a thread to find the proper way out. However, it is one of the reason why the town of Split is so charming place. Also, you might be surprised by shouting which gets double loudness in this narrow streets. It is, however, normal way of speaking between the locals who are very temperament and, like I said it, mad in a positive way.
In case you're stucked here don't panic coz every street leads in some direction.
Follow the locals, it is the easiest way to step out of it. Leave a Comment

by billus I perambulate about the lower town, a haven for bus queuers, diesel juggernauts, high class call girls, freight trains, and the ubiquitous portraits of Franjo Tudjman. He is the savior of the nation, having saved Vukovar from the dogs of serbia, the expunger of the population of the Krajina Serb Republic of Croatia, and the defender of Zagreb against Serb missile attacks. 'Pobjede of Vukovar' reads the caption below as he waves like Nixon before a crowd of adoring Vukovians. Leave a Comment

Ot is not my experience but a friends of mine. I saw here lots of people happy with cheap accommodation eith older women seeking guests at the street. So, my friend took that same accommodation adn got a realtivly clean room. She was supposed to stay there for 4 nights but on the morning of her 3rd day police with inspestion baged in and sent all the guests out. It turned out that the nice old lady was renting without licence. She found out later that most of the people who were looking for guests on the street didi the sanem without the licence. My friend had to pich up her stuff and find some hotel tah tshe payed dearly and afcourse got no money back from the old lady. She said to me that it ruined her whole trip
Ask for price list and licence to show it to you.
Find accomodation over internet or travel agency. Prices are almost the same.
