Favorite thing: I have been unable to identify this landmark as I have not climbed on top of the hill (there was no safe anchorage nearby). Who knows what it is ? It looks like some fortified thing, however, it is difficult to evaluate how big it is. May be it is smaller than it seems ? I have read something about a film set being built on Mana, but this is standing on Kornati mains island !
February 2007. I have now found that this was the Tureta Fortress, the most significant structure dating from the Byzantine Era that is found on the main Kornati island. It dates probably from the 6th century (Late Antique and Early Middle Age architecture). It is assumed that the fortress was build for military purposes – to safeguard and control the navigation on the Adriatic Sea, a relatively unsafe place at the time. (burrowed from the official Kornati web site)

Favorite thing: We have to go back to civilization on Dugi Otok (the long island). It is 44 kilometers long and 4 wide. The main city is Sali, a fishing harbor whose main interest is to be a good shelter. However, it is often packed with fishermen boats and it is not easy to find a place to moor.

Favorite thing: We are, at last, leaving Zadar and finally sailing towards the Kornati. There is always a lot to do before you can sail : to have your log book checked by the "Kapetanija", to get the boat ready with food , water and petrol. When you sail, you feel free from everything of civilized life !
Fondest memory: Peace

Favorite thing: It has to be Žirje, which is known for its clear and blue sea and some very interesting cultural and historical monuments. The highest hill is Kapiċ (131 m). Vegetation on island is mostly scrub, which expands for lack of agricultural activities. There are some vineyards, some olive and fig plantations.
Fondest memory: Peaceful islands !

Favorite thing: Sometimes, there is a little green spot at the bottom of the slope. Actually, it is more greenish than bright green but amidst this stone desert, greenish looks definitely green. It has to be a place that happens to keep all year long some of the water that fell in Spring.

Favorite thing: When sailing to the Kornati, the north-eastern tip of the main Kornati Island offers the first really typical sight. It has this rugged "desert" look, with bare rocks and dried vegetation, that we will find on most islands of the archipelago !

Favorite thing: Božava is a smaller village on Dugi Otok. It is quieter than Sali and very nice. However, this is civilization again and I already miss the Kornati desert ! On the other hand, one can buy fresh bread, vegetables, fruits and even fishes !

Favorite thing: Vrulje is the main village of the main island. Main but single ! It has a few houses, no permanent inhabitants. The owner of the houses come in summer, mostly from Murter peninsula. Vrulje is proud of its 3 "streets" and 50 houses !

Favorite thing: In Summer, the Kornati are characterized by three colors : the blue of the sky, the dark blue of the sea and inserted between both, the dazzling white of the islands. Once you have seen that, you will never forget it !

Favorite thing: Had it been on the way to the Kornati, we would have found this landscape magnificent. On the way back to Zadar, leaving the Kornati, we cannot appreciate it the same way ! I feel this is Žirje, an island south to the Kornati.
