    Katedrala Sv Stošije, St
    Anastasia cathedral

Katedrala Sv Stošije, Saint Anastasia's cathedral is the largest Romanesque cathedral of Dalmatia, built in the 12th-13th century. The front has a look of its own with numerous small columns. The photos are not very good as there is not enough room to take the whole front of the cathedral. Moreover the sun was too low and half of the front was not lit.

The first picture is made of two photos and shows the general view of the front of Saint Anastasia.

The second photo is a close up on the left entrance. Two apostles stand, one on each side. The door is framed with two cabled columns and topped by a lamb.

The third photo shows the right entrance, which is exactly symmetrical to the left one, with also two apostles and also a lamb but that looks in the opposite direction. However it has no cabled columns.

The fourth photo shows the main entrance. The right and bottom part was not lit by the sun and so dark that nothing could be seen. I have done my best to bring some light but that gives a strange look which is not real but I could not wait next morning to have a better shot !

The last photo is a close up on the tympanum above the central portal with a Virgin with Child on the throne with two saints at her side, St. Zoilus and St. Anastasia.

One of the sights in Zadar's Riva is the Sea organ. It was constructed by architect Nikola Basic. It is specifically shaped part of the coast that consist of several stairs descending into the sea. The stairs extend for about 70 meters along the coast, and under them. On the 35 pipes of different lenght there are whistles, which play 7 chords of 5 tones. .
When the sea pushes air through the whistles, a melancholy chords are played, with the sound emerging through the perforated stone stairs. You have to hear it to believe it!

The Roman Forum was the largest on the eastern shore of the Adriatic. It was founded by the first Emperor Augustus, as documented on two 3rd century AD stone carvings on the site. A raised area on the west side was the site of a temple dedicated to Jupiter, Juno and Minerva. To one side a "Pillar of Shame" still stands, where sentenced people were chained and pilloried. It was used for this purpose until 1840.

The first photo shows the 15 meters high "Pillar of Shame"

The second photo shows the "Pillar of Shame" with in the background the bell tower of the cathedral

The third photo is a close up on its top where the Lion of St. Mark has been added later by the Venetians but is now slightly damaged by bullets.

Next to the globally known Sea Organ, shines the Greeting to the sun, designed by the same architect. It consists of three hundred glass panels conceived in form of amphitheater surrounded by a stylized display of all Solar System planets and their orbits. When sunset comes, the lighting elements are activated, producing an impressive game of lights.

During our staying in Petrcane, we also made a visit to island Pag. Our hosts showed us a Park of old olive groves. Each of the trees looks like a sculpture. They are about 2000 years old. We were told that the owner of the tree is'nt necesary to be the owner of the land, but the one who has planted it. Intersting, isn't it?

    Crvka Sv Krševana, Church
    of Saint Chrysogonus
    by JLBG, 2 more photos
Crvka Sv Krševana, (Chiesa San Crisogono, Church of Saint Chrysogonus) stands on Simuna Kožičica Benje where was the Roman "emporium" (warehouse) on the main north-south axis, formerly called Cardo. The tradition says that in the 6th century, there was a chapel from the Benedictine convent. In the 10th century a new church was built for the Benedictine convent.

The present church was built later and consecrated in 1175. It belongs to the Benedictine monastery. It is a characteristic example of a monumental Romanesque church of very fine proportions and decent and refined Romanesque ornaments. The apses show frescos of John the Baptist, St. Chrysogonus, St. Anastasia and Christ dating from the 13th and 14th centuries. The high altar was built in 1701 by citizens who were spared from plague.

Four statues in white marble were placed on the altar in 1717 - the patron saints of Zadar: Anastasia, Zoilus, Grisogonus and Simeon. They were carved by the Venetian sculptor Alvise Tagliapietra. The belfry of St. Grisogonus was started in 1485. The work progressed very slowly. It reached the present height in 1546, but it was never completed.

The first photo shows the front of Saint Chrysogonus which is quite simple

The second shows the side, decorated with delightful barley-sugar twist columns.

The rear has three semicircular apses, the central one (third photo) is decorated with a gallery.

Kornati islands is a "must trip" to do in Zadar's area. There are many tourist agencies offering a whole day boat trips to Kornati, that include food and drinks accompanied with music.
On attached photos you can see some views of the fantastic Croatian coast, from the water side.

Kornati islands is a group of about 130 islands, islets and reefs, covering an area of about 64 sq km. The Kornati archipelago is just across the cities of Zadar and Sibenik. Our trip was blessed with sun, as you can notice in attached photos. We passed some lonesome
houses with small private ports...What a beauty and peace!

Pillar of Shame is situated on the north-western side of Roman Forum, whose remains are still seen right in front of the Church of Saint Donat. At the Pillar of Shame, evildoers were chained and humiliated in the Middle Ages.

    Crvka i Samostan Sv Marije
    by JLBG, 1 more photos
Crvka Sv Marije or chiesa Santa Maria (Church saint Mary) was founded in 1066 by a widowed noblewoman from Zadar, Cika, sister of the Croatian King Kresimir IV. It was dedicated in 1091. It was the church of saint Mary Benedictine monastery.

It was almost completely rebuilt during the 16th century in the Renaissance spirit but retained its Dalmatian aspect with its rounded gables, looking very much like the cathedral of Sibenik. The monastery and the church were seriously damaged in World War II and their reconstruction was completed in 1972. The monastery was partly transformed into a museum of religious art with a beautiful cloistered garden only visible from the museum's interior.
It has a fine Baroque interior with remnants of early Romanesque frescoes. The nunnery archive contains a precious collection of charters related to 9th century Croatian rulers.
