If you look for endless wide beaches with thin sand, don't go to Croatia. No matter what any tourist agent will tell you, there are only very few sandy beaches of reasonable size, and still it's not thin sand. This doesn't mean that most of the croatian beaches (gravel, concrete, artificial) are not OK anyway; but I personally enjoy much more the sea, maybe on a boat, than the beaches.
Besides its incredible coulours, the sea along the coast in Croatia is generally crystal clear. Maybe because of the many islands protecting the coast from too rough seas and the lack of sandy beaches and big rivers, the vertical visibility usually exceeds 30 meters. You can swim and easily see the sea bottom from the top without a mask.
The postcard-like colours of the dalmatian sea, appearing in most tourist pamphlets, are not a photographer's artifact: they are real! Ranging from deep blue to light turquoise and green, the sea in Croatia is simply wonderful. And this is especially true the southest you are along the dalmatian coast.
Rijeka is not obe of the touristic cities in Croatia, but ferries run from here to almost everywhere on the adriatic. If you have a few hours to kill before boarding on one of those ferries (as we had) take a strol beyond the main street in the "CORZO". You'll find some very interesting corners buildings and shops*
Jadrolinija is the bigest ferry operation in Croatia. They have international sailings, to Italy, Coastal lines, along the Adriatic coast, from Rijeka in the north to Dubrovnik in the south, with a few stops along the way, and many local lines between the main land and the many Islands.We drove our r way from Dubrovnik up to the Slovenia border and over, and as our plane back home flew out of Dubrovnik, we found it very convenient to do our way south, on a ferry.The ride is smooth I'm not sure this applies always). sunset is beautifull, cabins are reasonable (if you need them at all, and at most for 1 night) and so is the price.You can choose your sailing at:http://www.jadrolinija.hr/default.aspx?lang=2I emailed with them, and they were very cooperative and helpfull.
We, present day Croats, belong to the Slavic family tree, or to be more precise, to the South Slavs. We speak Croatian with English as the leading foreign language, esp among population under 35. The exception is Istria with many bilingual people (Croatian & Italian). I would do injustice not to mention some other bilingual areas such as the Croatian-Czech speaking population in and around the town of Daruvar. Croats living in the coastal region usually speak some German and Italian, partly due to the turbulent past, partly because of the long tradition of organized tourism.
We're small: under 5 million in population and only 56,542 square kilometers in surafce area (+ some 31 000 km2 of territorial waters). Small but very old - archaeological findings testify to here having been Illyrian settlements as early as 6th century BC. For more history you'll be safer with the Croatian Tourist Board than me *LOL*

The Adriatic sea was important trade route for thousands of years, due to it's location and specific attributes of coastline and numerous islands.
