Croatia can be crowded!

by travelmad478

In 2003, it seemed like everyone and his brother was visiting Croatia. We went to the country before high season, at the end of May, and were absolutely stunned by the amount of tourists crowding into this small country. Dubrovnik in particular was positively heaving with people, to the extent that it became pretty unpleasant to walk around the old city. I can't believe what the place must be like in the high-season months of July and August.

Sibenik

by A2002

I have not got enough space, hence I gotta add another tip for Sibenik. Sibenik I like Sibenik. When we arrived there, it is in the late afternoon. It is a beautiful town by the Adriatic coast. The town is beautifully lit up at night and the streets get quite crowded. Sunset at Sibenik is beautiful and romantic, especially along the coast. After the sun has set, we started to drive down South. We found a zimmer and stayed in a small town before Trogir for Eur22 for an apartment with a kitchen plus a fantastic view of the adriatic sea. We took a lot of pictures the next morning during the beautiful sun rise.

Zadar - Skradinski Buk - Split - Sibenik - Trogir

by A2002

Day 4: Zadar - Split - Sibenik - Trogir Zadar We started our journey further South along the coast early in the morning after a simple breakfast at Albin Pension. Breakfast was nothing fantastic and I can eat more than what was offered. The breakfast is included in the expensive room rates. Before we left, we visited Zadar city center. We saw the beautiful churches with the St Donat as the most impressive. I was setting up my tripod to take a picture of myself in front of the St Donat. I was "aimed" by a big camera and the crew started walking towards me. My goodness, they were from the Croatia National Television. I was interviewed about why I have chosen to visit Croatia and Zadar. *blush* *blush*. Split Split is a touristy city with heavy traffic around the city wall. When we enter the historic inner city within the palace wall, I was impressed by the well preserved and...

Korcula - Rijeka

by A2002

Day 8: Korcula - Rijeka We had some rest on the comfy sofa in the deck and woke up just in time for the sun rise. Sun rise was beautiful. We arrived at Rijeka at about 1.30pm. We drove out of Rijeka city towards Slovenia. We went to Postogna Jama and were very impressed by the massive structures in the huge cave. I love Slovenia and will go there again.

Korcula

by A2002

I had too many words... so I had to put another tip for Korcula... Korcula Since we are driving, Korcula island is not big. In October, the main sights on Korcula will be Korcula town. It looks like a typical Dalmatian town. We spent 8 hours on the island and it got a bit bored. The shops and cafes seems to close in the afternoon and open again in the late evening. Hence, we drove to a sandy beach and park there and sleep in the car. :-)We had our dinner at a restuarant recommended in Lonely Planet. Not a fantastic meal though. The fish soup is like putting some fish stock and add hot water and served in a small bowl. It is the most expensive and not worth the money. After dinner, we parked our car in the queue for the ferry. Finally, the long-awaited ferry arrived and I had a nerve-wrecking drive up the ferry (more in my transportation tip). We had to find some where to sleep in the...

Dubrovnik - Korcula

by A2002

Day 7: Dubrovnik - Korcula - Rijeka We have booked a ticket to get to Rijeka on the ferry from Dubrovnik. There was very strong wind the night before and the ferry, which was coming from Bari, Italy, was delayed by 8 hours. Since the ferry will be passing by Korcula, we decided to make a trip to Korcula first via Orebic on the car ferry.By the way, the staffs at Jadrolinija are not very willing to make any changes to the tickets. We wanted to cancel the tickets, and we were told that we can reach Rijeka by 11am the next morning (the normal scheduled arrival is 7am). I asked again and I was told the same thing, "you will arrive by 11am". I thought "ok, maybe the ferry will go faster to make up the time delayed". I asked if I can return my ticket from Dubrovnik to Rijeka and buy another ticket from Korcula to Rijeka instead. I was told that I can use my ticket (Dubrovnik - Rijeka) to...

Trogir - Solin - Mali Ston - Dubrovnik

by A2002

Day 5: Trogir - Solin - Mali Ston - Dubrovnik Trogir Trogir is a UNESCO acknowledged World Cultural Heritage town. It is a beautiful, small town with cobbled streets and a very interesting market in the morning. The Romanasque church, Renaissance and Baroque buildings from the Venetian period make the town very picturesque. Solin Solin is the place for the Roman ruins with a nice amphitheatre, though not as complete as the one in Rome. It is a huge site of the ruins of a Roman settlement. There are ruins of a cathedral, cemetry, town, bath, amphitheatre, etc. If you are interested in Roman ruins, you can visit there. Mali Ston Mali Ston is a very small town with the "great wall". This town is famous for fresh oyster and seafood. We stopped by this town for a sumptous seafood dinner. We went into one of the posh looking restaurant (Kaptanova). Maybe because we are not dressed in...

Dubrovnik - Cavtat - Dubrovnik

by A2002

Day 6: Dubrovnik - Cavtat - Dubrovnik The sky was overcast in the morning when we started our drive to the city center from the Pension. According to the owner of the pension, it would rain during the night and nice weather after that in the late morning. However, it had not started to rain the night before. When we reach the center, it started to rain. It was that type of intermittent heavy rain. Not wanting to be caught in the rain, we found a parking space in front of a 5 star hotel (oops.. forgot the name) and decided to have our morning coffee fix at the lobby with a great view of Dubrovnik old town. The atmosphere was very nice with a great view. After our coffee fix, and that it was still raining, we decided to drive to Cavtat to have a look at the town. Cavtat Cavtat is a small, picturesque, medieval, Dalmatian town by the adriatic sea, surronded by hills. When we reached...

Opatija - Krk Island - Otocac

by A2002

Day 2: Opatija - Krk Island - Otocac Opatija We walked around the town center of Opatija, where the interesting and crowded morning market is. The market seems like a meeting place for many locals too. After the shopping and photo taking at the colourful market, we went to Krk Island and visited Krk town first. Krk Island Krk town is a touristy town with lots of coaches. It is a small beautiful town though. After reading the Lonely Planet, we decided to get to Vrbnik for lunch in Restaurant Nada. It is recommended in Lonely Planet that the seafood there is great. We had grilled calamarie, fish soup, seafood pasta, and a glass of wine. The meal was excellent. On the island, we visited Baska briefly. Then we started to head towards Plitvice National Park. Along the way, we passed by many abandoned or half built houses. It is quite sad to see the numerous holes on the walls which I...
