Another option is highway, especially if you're already coming from Zagreb direction.

Don't exit in Dugopolje (Split), but continue to exit "Ravča". From there road is ok, but has lot of bends. You'll have to pass Baćina and Ploče (I recommend seeing Baćinska jezera - Lakes in Baćina) to get to Gradac. Road is well marked, you'll be fine.

I'd recommend this route during summer time.

You can get to Gradac (from Split and other northern directions) from couple of routes. I'll describe here the first one.

Coming from Split via route D8. This road passes right along coastline and goes through many municipalities and towns (Omiš, Makarska, Brela, Baška...). This is the cheapest way (no tolls) of getting to Gradac, but also can be problems during summer because of traffic congestions (biggest problem, Stobreč near Split. especially avoid rush hours).
Also, bus to Makarska and Dubrovnik passes here and it usually stops in Gradac too.

It takes about 100 km from Split to Gradac.

Favorite thing: The best thing about this trip was sitting in a coffee place, reading a book and having scenery like this in front of you.
Second best part was my cell phone turned off.
