Buzet Things to Do

  • Delicious local wine and olive oil

4 kms from Buzet the little village of Sovinjak produces a great white local wine ...it worth the way up there, and as an extra a great view. 1 km away an olive oil production that is on the catalogue of one of the best olive oils on world.

  • Cemetery

I do not usually take pictures of cemeteries, but this one looks special. We were in late October and it was full of flowers that added some sun in the landscape. It fitted well in the landscape, sitting at mid-heights of the hill, on a shoulder of the city hill and overhanging on the Mirna valley.

  • Narrow alley

A passage so narrow that one has better take it before dinner shows in the background other houses with linen hanging and a vineBuzet is well known for wine making, especially with the Terrano.

  • Close-up !

A close-up shows a very serious looking guy, with the hair neatly combed towards the rear. He does not look like smiling at all and is very intimidating with its long stiff moustache and thin tight lips ! Not really the kind of guy you would be joking with !

  • Big Brother is watching you !

Near the Parish church, on Titov trg, a doorway is topped by an amazing human head gazing down at you if you dare to walk into the passage ! On the left, GMP is clearly carved in the stone. On the right, 1835 can be read though not so clear. Then we can hypothesize that this was the name of the owner of this house when it was built.

  • The bell-tower

The bell-tower in Buzet was built in 1897. It has five floors, an octagonal top with a pyramid roof and is 36 meters high. It is one of the highest of Central Istria. On the last floor there is a lounge for the bells with four belfries.

  • Inside the Parish church

The inside of the Parish church of Buzet is very simple and has little ornaments. In the choir, wall paintings from the XIXth century have not much character. The church has a 1787 organ from the famous Venetian organ maker Gaetano Callido, considered as the most famous organ maker of his century and possibly of any time.

  • Parish Church

The Parish Church is dedicated to the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It was built in the XVIIIth century directly on the natural rock. In front of the church, in some places, the bare rock can be seen and makes the soil of the square.

  • Climbing to the top city

After the Large Gate, the paved street climbs smoothly along the hill and reveals the landscape over the Mirna river valley, which is superb. However, I was amazed to notice that the scent of the white truffles does not reach that altitude!

  • Old fountain

As I have already seen in other cities of inner Istria, the old fountains are still there, though now every house gets its water on the tap. These old fountains are no more in use but stand as a reminder of the (recent) past.

  • City plan

The bronze carving of the city plan is set by the side of the Large Gate, which makes sense, as you need to know how the city is looking when you enter the gate. Sorry, it was drizzling, this is why the picture is not perfectly sharp. I will have to take a new picture on a sunny day !

  • The big Gate

Buzet is an old medieval town that was once the seat of the Venetian administration for Istria. It is why it has a strong town wall with two town gate. The Large Gate from 1547 and the Small Gate from the 1592. Here, the Big Gate is shown. Woops, why does that stupid Microsoft software wants to correct what I have written ? When I write "Big Gate",...
