Buje

by croisbeauty

The city's historic core is located on a 222 m high mount, while the new borough streches along the road for Koper and Trieste. The dynamic relief, olive-groves and vineyards give the landscape its basic tones.Buje managed to preserve, in part, the former defensive system, the walls, the Great city gates, the Western city gates, the pentagonal tower of St. Martin and the quadrangular tower. The worth of note is also the Municipal Loggia from the 15th century. The Baroque-neo-classicist parish church of St. Servulus was erected in the 18th century in place of an older Romanes-Gothic eddifice from 13th century.

Vižinada

A settlement of predominantly rural characteristics located some fifteen kilometres to the northeast of Porec. The mildly rolling relief favours the growning of vines and other crops characteristic of the Istrian climate.Vižinada's parish was first mentioned in 1177 in a deed of gift made by the Pope Alexander III. The neo-classicist parich church of St. Jerome, was built in 1837 on the site of a former Romanesque church from the 12th century. The baroque public cistern from the 18th century was built after a plan made by Simeone Batistella.Carlotta Grisi (1819-1899), one of the best European ballerinas was born in Vižinada.

NP Brijuni

by croisbeauty

A group of 14 islands and islets, "like green gems sprinkled on a blue carpet", located between Puka and Rovinj. The call of the sea and the mild climate, the undisturbed natural balance, promenades and sports courts make Brijuni the prestigious tourist destination that they are.Kings and emperors, princesses and princes, baronesses and barons and the rest of the European elite relaxed here in the beginning of the 20th century. The thermal characteristics of the Mediterranean climate, adequate amounts of humidity and quite thick layers of red soil contribute to the growth of the indigenous and intoduced exotic vegetation. Forest are sanctuaries and the clearings are pasture-grounds for game: the fallow, deer, the axis deer, the doe and the mouflon. Around two hundred species of birds nest or periodically stay in Brijuni. Animals in the Safari park draw special attention: zebras, Llamus,...

by tanyaspantry

I just returned from a week and a half in this beautiful country, and wanted to share my travel experiences, as I found some great tips on this site. I visited Rovinj, Pula, Groznjan and Motovun, and explored wine roads and ate well. Enjoy! Oh, the food. Super local, made with care.

Don Truffle

by Enzyme_X

Istria is one of the few places 7besides parts of France and Italy) where you can find this rare delicacy, known as truffle. It grows underground and to find them, you have to have well trained dogs that can sense the trume. Well, pigs are an aternative, but they tend to eat what they find, so it's better to have dogs, which are satisfied with a reword from their master. One name , that is almost a synoynim for the truffle, is Karlo Zigante, the man that controles all the business with truffles. He started his business of buying, processing and selling truffles in 1990. His products are classified as the authentic Istrian product and are sold as well in Croatia as abroad. Zigante also owns four shops in Istria, where you can buy his products. You can find them in Livade, Buje, Buzet & Pula. He also runs a restaurant in Livade, the town which is also his headquarters.

Piran

by croisbeauty

The tiny part of the most northern Istria peninsula belongs to the Republic of Slovenia. Piran is, as far as I am concerning, the most beautiful coastal town in Slovenia. It is typical Mediterranean town with short and narrow streets in its old core. Since it was in the past a part of the Venetian Republic, characteristical Venetian architectural style can be noticed on many of the buildings situated in the old core of the town.
