Vila Angiolina by croisbeauty Opatija is a combination of natural forest and maintained park landscape. The park trees, flowerbeds, promenades and resting-places have a beneficial effect on the respiratory organs, the vascular system and the general sense of well-being. The Angiolina and Sv. Jakov parks were laid out between 1845 and 1860, and represent a harmonious intermigling of exotic and indigenous species of trees. Leave a Comment

The Art Pavillion, which is located right next to the hotel Kvarner, bears the name of Juraj Matija Sporer, who advocated the program of turning Opatija into a "sea balnearium" and a winter resort. The most prominent promotors of that idea were: Higinij Scarpa, the director of Southern Railroad Friedrich Julius Shueller, the Viennese physician Leopold Ritter von Schroetter, Viennese surgeon Theodor Billroth and Max Joseph Oertel, the founder of the sanatorium in Opatija. by novsco61 In the flourishing vegetation along the sea shore, near Saint Jacob' church, Iginio Scarpa, a merchant and patrician of Rijeka, built a villa in 1844 suraunded by a flower garden and park. He named it Villa Angiolina in honour of his wife. The hospitable marreid couple opened wide the doors of their summer house. The first «real» tourists began coming to St. Jacob's Abbey. This marked the begining of Opatija's tourist development. Leave a Comment

Rather than walk along the busy sidewalks, you may choose to stroll along the famous beachside promenade - Lungo Mare, a beautiful cobblestone walkway that start in Volosko and extends on to Opatija, Icici, Ika and Lovran, all together 12 km. Construction of the promenade began in 1885 (at the same time as Opatija's first two hotels, Kvarner and Imperial, were being opened) and was completed in 1889 when Opatija was declared a climatic health resort. You can walk the whole way along the sea side. It's lovely! You pass by several spectacular old villas surrounded with beautiful gardens. On the way there are beaches, bars and a small marina. The walking path is undisturbed by traffic and offers enjoyable moments of tranquility. I walked from Volosko to Opatija and back, all together 24 km, without even noticing how quickly time passed by. I really enjoyed it! more pics in the Travelogue Directions: from Volosko via Opatija, Icici, Ika to Lovran

by novsco61 It was built in phases. The first, northern phase of the path (Volosko-Slatina) was completed in 1889, when Opatija officially becomes a Health Resort ,the stretch from Dražice to the port was finished around 1888 and the southernmost section (that connected Opatija with the promenade in Lovran) only around 1911.
