The Church of St. James, along with the Benedictine Abbey, represents the very beginning of the town. The church and the monastery with their initial Latin name "Abbatia Sancti Jacobi ad Palum", have historical significance because the settlement was named by translating the first word, ABBATIA = OPATIJA. Opatija is a combination of natural forest and maintained park landscape. The park trees, flowerbeds, promenades and resting-places have a beneficial effect on the respiratory organs, the vascular system and the general sense of well-being. The Angiolina and Sv. Jakov parks were laid out between 1845 and 1860, and represent a harmonious intermigling of exotic and indigenous species of trees. Leave a Comment

The Art Pavillion, which is located right next to the hotel Kvarner, bears the name of Juraj Matija Sporer, who advocated the program of turning Opatija into a "sea balnearium" and a winter resort. The most prominent promotors of that idea were: Higinij Scarpa, the director of Southern Railroad Friedrich Julius Shueller, the Viennese physician Leopold Ritter von Schroetter, Viennese surgeon Theodor Billroth and Max Joseph Oertel, the founder of the sanatorium in Opatija. Girl with a seagull, which is placed near the Art Pavillion on Lungomare, is one of the most famous landmarks of Opatija. Actually, the real name of the monument, made by Zvonko Car in 1956, is "Salute to the sea", but locals called it simply Girl with a segull. Leave a Comment Address: Lungomare

This nice villa was built in 1844 and completely renovated in 2000. Its first owner was Iginio Scarpa; a wealthy merchant from Rijeka. He gave the villa the name of his deceased wife. The ground floor of the villa is open to visitors. It is a large room with beautiful paintings on the ceiling. Around Villa Angiolina there is a park with about 159 plant species. There you'll see banana trees, bamboos and also various palms. Leave a Comment Directions: Villa Angelina is situated near the Lungomare.
