The roots of the tourist industry in Opatija date back to the 1840, when H. Scarpa, merchant from Rijeka, had the Villa Angiolina built, named after his vife. Very soon the villa became a place to go to for he people of Rijeka and the occasional residence of the owner's friends.
The Croatian Vice-Roy Josip Jelacic and Austrian Empress Anna Maria di Savoia were among the first guests to reside in the villa Angiolina.
Vila Amelia is located in the park, right next to the Vila Angiolina.

Opatija is a combination of natural forest and maintained park landscape. The park trees, flowerbeds, promenades and resting-places have a beneficial effect on the respiratory organs, the vascular system and the general sense of well-being.
The Angiolina and Sv. Jakov parks were laid out between 1845 and 1860, and represent a harmonious intermigling of exotic and indigenous species of trees.

Fontana Helios and Selena

The Fountain Helios and Selena, work of the sculptor Hans Rathaustsky from 1889, is placed in the central Opatija park, vis-a-vis hotel Imperial and in the vicinity of the Church of St. James.
The fountain is designed in neo-Baroque style and that fits to Biedermaier, Secession and Historicism, the architectural styles which are dominant in the older hotels and villas in Opatija.

Other buildings blend in more beautifully with the lush countryside. Despite the tremendous number or tourists this area has, it doesn't take much to shut them out and enjoy the respect for history and nature that the residents here clearly show!

A Mid-Day Rest

Ah-h-h-h-h

All though Opatija is small, it makes no sense to take the bus. The town really consists of one main street and pretty much all of what the town has to offer can be found there. It sure is nice (especially if the cobblestone is getting on your nerves) to take a break though!

Hard to believe but...

...these shots were taken mid-day. You see, since Opatija is quite far north in Croatia, a mass of German tourists descend upon the town in summer. Walking the streets can be quite a pain. So this little retreat is really a gem to find!

No tourists here...

For a very small town, Opatija has some wonderful surprises, like this park, hidden away from the main drag. It is a lovely place to escape from the heat of the sun and enjoy some peaceful moments as the tourists throng only a few meters away. You are as oblivious of them as they are of you!

Close to the bathing area and St Jacov's church, in a colourful small garden, a central fountain is a work of sculptor Hans Rathautsky, built in 1889.

Yes, shopping center is in this gorgeous building. Personally, I don't like a idea to use this building for this, but ... I love shopping c. but not in this building :(
