I'd suggest not to waste your time in Veprinac or in Kastav. These are two Medieval villages, but there is not much to see or do there.
Veprinac is a place with a two churches; a food shop and a cafe. Kastav has a big loggia; some churches, a couple of restaurants, a supermarket and a post office.

not so much a tourist trap, but not a lot of kop
we stayed in the Kvarner and although a lovely grand hotel in a nice location the breakfast and dinner buffets were very german orientated,in fact apart from the salad bar there was nothing much that i have eaten before.
if you like salami and spam for breakfast you are in luck!!
also at the evening meal the waiters (not their faults ,they are do a good job working there) offer you drinks which for us was working out about £6-9 per dinner
fair enough but the drinks were very expensive compared to the locale
all in all i would say go B+B unless you are very budget conscious, theres lots of nice places to eat in opatija and i have heard all the hotels buffets are similar
Unique Suggestions: just share a bottle of water, then go for a beer, wine etc. afterwards
Fun Alternatives: alternative is a pizza and a beer for about 50KN =£5
lots of choice around, maybe its just my english tastebuds but i just dont like european hotel food

As described before, the amount of tourists that hit this tiny town is unbelievable. Yes it is possible to get away from them, however, you really do have to make the effort!
Fun Alternatives: Just outside of town are rocky areas where you can lie out, tan or swim in the warm Adriatic. You don't need to go far! But do stake out your hidden spot early -- they will disappear as the day progresses.
Now if you REALLY want to get away from the tourists, my stoyr continues under OFF THE BEATEN PATH.
