Map of Istria
For those that do not know, Istria is a small, triangular shaped peninsula of Croatia that extends between Trieste in Italy and Rijeka in Croatia. Poreč stands on the West coast, about at mid distance between Trieste and Pula, at the southern end of the peninsula.

View of the city
The satellite view given by Google Earth (two photos have been pasted) shows on top the parking lot for the market. Underneath, the market is a square roof. Just underneath, the space with no roofs is Trg J. Rakovca. On the left of Trg J. Rakovca, another space with no roofs is Trg Slobode. More on the left is the old city.
The harbor of Poreč stands on the east coast of the peninsula. It is well sheltered by the island and the piers that extend at both of its ends. The harbor welcomes both private yachts and local excursion boats for day sailings.
During the summer months a "Tourist mini Train" travels everyday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. One train travels from Zelena Laguna in the south and from Hotel Luna in the north to the centre of Porec and back. Ticket can be bought on the train.
tickets are 15 for adults and 8 for kids
Planes, Buses, Taxis...
Getting to Porec from Toronto Canada where I live was quite a nightmare. You have to change two flights to get to Zagreb, and that is the easy part. Then you have to get to bus station from the airport (1 hour using a bus) and then catch a bus to Porec (300km distance). The ride lasts around 5 hours, and bus goes very slow. Visits almost every village on the way. I enjoyed even the ride since I haven't been here in 10 years and I missed everything so much. All together took me around 20 hours to get to Porec, but it was well worth it.
Take a cab in Porec when you go out in the evening but negotiate the price first. For excursions to Vrsar, Lanterna and other attractive places around Porec bus will do - it is very cheap and relatively reliable. For everything else - beach, shopping - walk.
Map of Poreč
This map of Poreč and surroundings is on display at several places in the city. This one was shot on the side of the parking lot that is close to the city market.
The old city is on the peninsula (light brown). The yellow parts are modern developments of the city. Hotels show in red

Park in the Closest Designated Lot
The parking charge is 6 kuna an hour, or about $1.25. That is probably a reasonable charge since other lots located further away are not a lot cheaper at about 4-5 kuna. It is not worth the extra steps. It you were able to find a place on Zagrebacka, the charge is 5 kuna, and I think has maximum time limits. Some try to park along the harbor side, but this is restricted for locals living in the old town, and tow away is a definite.
- Arts and Culture
there is no trainstation in Porec. The closest one is in Pazin, which is located between Rijeka and Porec about 30 kms from Porec. the connections from pazin are quite good though.
The other ting you can do it to take the train to Kopar in Slovenia(50) and take a bus from there.
to get to the laguna resorts from porec, you can get the tourist train, it takes half hour through the woods...we called it the noddy train cos it looks like a kids toy!
alternatively take the taxi boat! - the yellow and blue one.

A small ferry departs from the harbour and calls at Brulo, Plava Laguna and Zelena Laguna. An easy way to visit these areas that are just out of town but, be aware that this is not a large boat nad the sea can get a little rough!! makes it even more fun.......the cost is just 2Kn for the journey.
there are 4 airports that most people use if they go to Porec by plane.
The first one is Zagreb, but its far from Porec( 300 kms) and the roads are bad so it will take quite a long time getting there.
The next option is to take the plane to Ljubljana in Slovenia(150 kms). The transfer time takes about 2½ hours, and the roads are better.
The next ones are Trieste and venice. Triste is 1½ hours drive from Porec, and has good connections.
Venice is also ok as when you reach Trieste there is a motorway all the way to the airport.
Getting from Trieste to Porec/Istria
Don't suppose by any chance you've booked a flight with Ryanair??
I went to Porec last year and our flight landed in Trieste - it was a nightmare and a half. I looked at bus schedules and catamarans from Venice, etc, but because we had to be there and back for scheduled flight times, I just couldn't afford to leave it down to something as unrealiable as public transport.
I ended up getting a return taxi from Sky Transfers (you should be able to find them through Google). It was expensive (around £190) but the peace of mind was well worth it. We had a lovely driver who collected us from the airport and took us up to the hotel, the man on the way back was a little less hospitable but it was very early in the morning and we weren't all that bright either!
