Porta Gemina

Favorite thing:
The Double Gate is the only double arched gate from twelve gates that use to provide entrance to the old roman city.

It was built in the 3rd century in place of an older gate. It provided entrance to the theatre.

One should stay and admire this gate for longer time, not just pass under it. It's a real beauty and I liked it very much. Think about the times when the city walls and the city itself were intact.

Sergius Triumphal Arch

codrutz 1440 reviews

Favorite thing:
This corinthian style portal was built in the 1st century b.c. (probably arround 30-27 b.c.)and is better known as The Golden Gate.

In fact the Golden Gate (Porta Aurea) was the actual gate that provided entrance trough the city walls. It is supposed that, from the 12 city gates that existed, Porta Aurea was the most beautiful, with its golden parts.

The Arch had no gate function, but a honorary one for the roman Sergius Family. It has also to do with the battle of Actium.

In the picture you can see the exterior view, as you enter the Old Town

Temple of Augustus

Temple of Augustus

Favorite thing:
Beside the Colloseum, city of Pula has a lot of roman history to offer. Having such a great location, of course that the Romans liked the place and built stuff for living and partying, like the colloseum, temples, plazas, etc.

Temple of Augustus is a roman temple still standing on a location of that used to be a Forum, a place where the Romans gathered to talk.

Fondest memory: Getting into the ampitheatre free of charge! We made our own way to Pula from Rovinj by the local bus but our tour company was also doing a guided tour that day. The guide snook us in because we got soaked on the boat trip in Venice a day or so earlier, and we travelled home from Venice in sopping wet clothes,so he was trying to make it up to us!

The city map

Favorite thing: The very detailed plan of the city centre can be seen on the little square in the Istarska ulica, just a foot from Arena. In fact, the city map, in bronze relief, is displayed on the top of the fountain. It might help you a lot in exploring the town of Pula.

The Roman Forum

Favorite thing: The Roman Forum, the central square in classical antiquity, was built on the west side of the city immediately close to the sea. It is a retangular area, 37 by 81 metres, around which the most important buildings of the religious, administrative, and judicial life of the city were located.

Arena

Favorite thing: Well known and one of the best preserved Roman amphitheatres in whole the world, it is a real emblem of my hometown of Pula. According to the documents it was built at the beginning of the 1th century in the time of emperor Claudius, and served mostly for the cruel gladiators games. It is the fifth biggest amphitheatres in whole the world.

Roman Amphitheater in Pula

Fondest memory: Part posing, part mesmerizing the place, I asked somebody to take a photo of meself.
Reclining (almost) to the ruins, there's a sentimental value seeping in my me...
Feeling good being far away from home, being at a majestic place in Pula, in Croatia.
Thank God, we have photos in our modern days now, otherwise I would gladly asked somebody to draw a painting of me reclining on those ruins....

Roman Amphitheater in Pula

Favorite thing: The first sight for me in capturing the wall of the Amphitheater. It looked so nice & impressive; touching the limestones that made of these wall made me feel that I could go back in times ! Listening to the roars, cheers & jeers of the gladiator events taken place here long ago.
Sorry, I am not talking about Rusell Crowe here...look for him elsewhere !
